PROPERTY FROM THE SPORTING AND TRAVEL LIBRARY OF ARNOLD "JAKE" JOHNSON
Possibly written by Ralph Fletcher Seymour, the American artist and publisher, this hunting journal captures with charming detail the experiences of two couples hunting in Wyoming. From the start, the author offers useful advice on achieving a successful and comfortable trip: "There are many sleeping outfits that are fairly satisfactory, but of those who have come under my observation, the best combination is an air mattress (with bellows to blow it up) and on top of it an eider down 'Arctic Sleeping Bag' with a Hudson Bay blanket inside to wrap closely around you. With this outfit you can 'sleep warm' and comfortably, no matter what the temperature may be—and 'sleeping warm' is one of the secrets of a successful hunting trip" (pp.5-6). He also rather usefully explains the definition of a dude, and how this alters depending on region: "The term 'Dude' is not used in the West as we are accustomed to use it, as a more or less opprobrious title to apply to 'dandies' or others of like ilk, but it is used indiscriminately of anyone coming into the State from outside, in the capacity of hunter, tourist or vacationer. Feminine 'Dudes' are 'Dudines,' while the inhabitants term themselves 'Roughnecks'" (p. 6).
