Although beaker vases are well known from the Wanli period, the present piece is unusual both in its proportions and design in blue-and-white. The closest comparable example is a smaller wucai vase of related design illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum. Porcelains in Polychrome and Contrasting Colours, Hong Kong, 1999, pl. 34. See another related wucai vase in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, included in Rosemary E. Scott, The Porcelains of Jingdezhen, London, 1993, pl. 13.
A blue-and-white Wanli beaker vase painted with dragons and phoenix, but of very different proportions, was sold in our London rooms, 17th December 1996, lot 59.
