Description

Robert-Jan te Rijdt has kindly informed us that these drawings are designs for illustrations, engraved by Reinier Vinkeles, to a Dutch edition of Plutarch (ed. E. Wassenbergh en H. Bosscha), De levens van doorluchtige Grieken en Romeinen, onderling vergeleeken..., 12 vols., Amsterdam 1789-1809.  An impression of the print after one of the two drawings is in the Rijksmuseum.1  Two further drawings by Buys, similar in format to these and surely made in connection with the same project, are in the British Museum.2
