Description

According to Ani Boyajian, “The artist made some changes to the composition of this 1927 gouache in 1940, as documented in his calendar entry, SDC 12/11/40: “Remodeled 1927 gouache ‘Cigarettes.’” It is likely that in 1940 he added the word “Tabac” and the other elements present in this work that are not found in this gouache’s related drawing Study for “Cigarettes,” 1927. It is unlikely that Davis would have included the word “Tabac” in the original 1927 composition, which was made prior to his 1928-29 stay in Paris” (Stuart Davis: A Catalogue Raisonné, New Haven, Connecticut, 2007, vol. II, p. 551).
