Overall, the condition of the crèche figure is good, with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. Some of the chain mail has been lost, in particular to the lower scalloped edge. It is possible that some elements of the clothing could be replaced, possibly the blue velvet. Consistent with the technique, the matrix of the figure is made of straw. This is partially visible at the back, which is not entirely covered by the clothes. The clothes are held together with pins. The handle of the sword is in the form of a screw, and the pommel is slightly loose. It is possible that some of the paint may have been refreshed, in particular the hair. There is craquelure to the paint. There are also some losses to the paint, such as at St Michael's proper left wrist. There are some small losses to the fabrics, including to the undershorts, which have a slightly mottled colour. There are some minor splits running through the proper left glazed eye. There is general wear to the polychromy and silvering at the base. The base is probably contemporary with the sculpture. There are four small holes to the reverse. There are three large holes and some smaller holes to the underside of the base.
