In the details of the handling, this delightful, rare study of a village street by Isaac van Ostade can be compared with another, similar drawing in a Dutch private collection
1, and in particular with two rather larger and later sheets, in Haarlem and Frankfurt, which Schnackenburg dates between 1643 and 1649.
2 Though his very early death means that his surviving
oeuvre is much smaller than that of his brother, Adriaen, Isaac van Ostade was an extremely gifted draughtsman.
