Description
In the details of the handling, this delightful, rare study of a village street by Isaac van Ostade can be compared with another, similar drawing in a Dutch private collection1, and in particular with two rather larger and later sheets, in Haarlem and Frankfurt, which Schnackenburg dates between 1643 and 1649.2 Though his very early death means that his surviving oeuvre is much smaller than that of his brother, Adriaen, Isaac van Ostade was an extremely gifted draughtsman.
