Description

Steen's map, which features the route of the 1645-mile march of Dodge's Dragoons, was drawn primarily to show the location of Indian peoples and identifies the lands of some eighteen tribes, including Omahas, Potawatamies, Otoes, Kickapoos, Osages, Creeks, Kioway, Camanche, and Gros Ventres. John L. Allen termed Steen's untitled map one of three most important of the 1830s, "a watershed in the cartography of the plains" ("Patterns Of Promise: Mapping The Plains And Prairies, 1800–1860," in 'Great Plains Quarterly,' 4 [Winter 1984]: 5–28). This is one of two maps issued with Gaines P. Kingsbury's 1836 government report, 'Journal of the Expedition of Dragoons under the Command of Col. Henry Dodge to the Rocky Mountains, during the summer of 1835.'
