Two autograph manuscripts signed ("Mark Twain"), being two signature aphorisms by Clemens, one published in Following the Equator (1897), and one from The Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, inscribed to Catherine Gregory:
"Be good & you will be lonesome. | Truly Yours | Mark Twain," on a pale green slip of paper (3 7/8 x 4 7/8 in.; 98 x 125 mm), n.p., November 1901. — "On the whole it is better to deserve honors & not have them, than have them & not deserve them. | Truly Yours | Mark Twain," and inscribed: "To | Catherine Gregory | from her friend | The Author," one page (7 1/8 x 5 in.; 182 x 128 mm), n.p., 6 April 1907, verso stamped "Joan of Arc | Trade"; light toning and soiling, remnants of guard mount, small closed tear affecting "On."
