A Spanish neoclassical gilt-metal, giltwood and marble mirror
late 18th century

Description

Commonly known as Bilbao mirrors after the port from which they were exported, these were very popular in the United States. American trade ships would usually dock in this Basque port-city and export these delicate pieces. It has not been precisely determined whether these mirrors originate from Spain or Northern Portugal.
A similar model can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rogers Fund, and illustrated op. cit. p. 186, n. 481, another is illustrated in Herbert F. Schiffer, The Mirror Book, Exton, 1983, p. 186.
