buthe/polke: friends is an exhibition of German artists and contemporaries Sigmar Polke and Michael Buthe. The two artists were born three years apart during the Second World War and became part of a generation of German artists to define the Post-War period, as well as becoming close friends. Polke and Buthe were increasingly experimental in their respective artistic practices and lifestyles into the 1970s. Polke began to live communally with Buthe being one of his many guests, and the artists each travelled extensively to Africa and the Middle East whilst also experimenting with hallucinogens.
The exhibition at S|2 will look at how these mind-expanding experiences and the shared networks of friends the artists were amongst came to influence their diverse artistic output. A new monograph on Michael Buthe will be published on the occasion of this exhibition – michael buthe: constellations. The publication was produced in collaboration with the Estate of Michael Buthe and Alexander and Bonin, New York who will present the concurrent exhibition: Michael Buthe. Selected Works 1968-1994 (3 March-18 April 2020).
