On Saturday, 7 September, Sotheby’s is delighted to commence its sale season in New York with The Magnolia Collection: Old World Wines from a Southern Gentleman. This compelling cellar showcases the best of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and the Rhône in all their splendor. The lion’s share of this collection comprises the great châteaux in the top vintages, many in parcel quantities and in original wooden cases. While highlights abound, it's worth noting full cases of Haut Brion 1989, Margaux 1990, Mouton 2000, Montrose 1990, and Petrus 1989, all in original wood.

While the breadth and depth of the Bordeaux is noteworthy, bidders will not want to miss the equally thoughtful selection of Burgundy, including flagship wines from Rousseau, Roumier, J-F Mugnier, Dujac, Méo-Camuzet, Rouget, Leflaive and Roulot.

Jamie Ritchie, Chairman, Sotheby’s Wine, commented: “The Southern gentleman who created this collection was a true wine connoisseur in the most unpretentious way. He had a deep knowledge and enjoyment of wines and loved comparing the quality of each vintage, along with the relative value in the marketplace. Over the course of twenty years, we spoke frequently, discussing the merits of the different years, growers and regions.

He was particularly fastidious with regard to sourcing wines “en-primeur”, or as soon as they arrived in the US, and ensuring that they were meticulously cared for, during shipment and at his home cellar. He focused on buying, collecting and drinking only the wines made by the best producers, in the finest vintages – those which he enjoyed, appreciated and that received critical acclaim. He also had a great passion for travel and exploring the finest restaurants.

In his business life, he was successful in a number of different industries, showing an innate understanding of each area, a sharp mind and never-ending curiosity.

He was a man of great principal and conviction and a true gentleman in every sense of the word.”
