The sale was led by Harald Sohlberg’s rare masterpiece From Værvågen, The Fisherman’s Cottage, which doubled its estimate to sell for £1.2 million. This far exceeded the previous auction record achieved at Sotheby’s in 1999, the last time a major painting by the artist was seen at auction. International bidding also led to above-estimate prices for works by Peder Severin Krøyer, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Alexander Koester, and Cornelis Springer.

Market leaders in 19th Century European Paintings, Sotheby’s next London sale will take place on 14 December. Defined by important works by artists working across Europe from Scandinavia to Spain, and from Poland to Paris, the sale showcases the diversity of art painted during the period.
