The Gold Mine Ride (Tunnels of Love): Reginald Marsh’s 1931 Depiction of New York’s Famous Coney Island

Reginald Marsh spent most of his artistic career in New York City and is best known for his scenes of everyday urban life. Like his mentor John Sloan, with whom he studied at the Art Students League, Marsh was fascinated with the teeming masses of humanity that filled the streets of New York. Painted in 1931, The Gold Mine Ride (Tunnels of Love) depicts a diverse crowd of New Yorkers gathered in front of The Gold Mine ride at Coney Island’s amusement park. This wonderful work by Marsh will be offered in Sotheby’s Modern Day Auction, 18 May 2022.
