The Fantastic Tale of the Lewis Chessmen

London | 02 July

In this episode of Masterworks, immerse yourself in the fantastical tale of the Lewis Chessmen and discover the latest member of this famous band of brothers. Found in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, the Lewis Chessmen have inspired new generations, from the classic British 1960s children’s animated television series, The Sagas of Noggin the Nog, to, most recently, Harry Potter, in the Warner Bros. production of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Japanese Manga, in Hoshino Yukinobu’s Professor Munakata’s British Museum Adventure. Bought for £5 by an antiques dealer in Edinburgh in the 1960s, A Warder (Attributed to the Lewis Chessmen Workshop) is a highlight of our upcoming Old Master Sculpture & Works of Art sale (02 | London).
