The Caretakers of Ancient Chinese Gilt-Bronze Sculptures

12 OCTOBER | HONG KONG

S otheby’s presents brilliant Chinese Buddhist gilt-bronze sculptures from the Jane and Leopold Swergold Collection.

The collection comprises 25 sculptures, created over nearly 600 years, from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Tang–Liao Dynasty. As a group, they encapsulate the evolution, in form and subject, of Chinese sculptural art.

For Jane and Leopold, collecting has never been about ownership: “We never felt that we owned [the sculptures]...we’re really caretakers, because if you think, these objects are thousands of years old. They’ve been through many hands,” says Jane.

“For me, the best part of this journey was that we were able to do it together,” says Leopold. “It was an adventure. This became something that the two of us shared, and it took us to a totally different world.”
