Coinciding with the re-opening of the National Portrait Gallery in London on 22 June, and forming part of their Portrait Mode programme, this summer Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction will feature Face to Face, a sequence of works dedicated to the artform of portraiture presenting a tightly curated selection of masterpieces exploring the connections between artist and subjects.
Beginning with the innovations of the Impressionists, Sotheby’s Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction spans the birth of Modernism in the early twentieth century through to the evolution of Abstraction and Pop Art.
Bringing together over a century of paintings, drawings and sculpture, the Modern and Contemporary Day Auction will showcase the multifaceted spirit of creativity from the late 19th century through to the present day. From the best of Impressionism and the revolutionary avant-garde movements of the early 20th century to the Abstract Expressionists and Contemporary artists working today, it will encapsulate the innovative ways in which artists have dared to challenge established norms over the course of 150 years.
