In 1915 Modigliani took up painting again after nearly five years dedicated to making sculpture. Rendered in tones of green, ochre, black and burgundy, Madame Dorival was one of the canvases he produced after this long hiatus, and it possesses a number of qualities for which Modigliani is best known. The breathtaking work will be offered in Sotheby’s Modern Evening Sale, 17 May 2022.
