Maximus Rex: History Unearthed

New York | 9 December

Following the sale of the first-ever Gorgosaurus skeleton in July, Sotheby’s will auction a standalone Tyrannosaurus rex skull this December, the first of its kind ever to appear at public auction. Highly sought after and instantly recognizable, this distinctive skull, named Maximus, is one of the best and most complete of its kind ever discovered. Tyrannosaurus rex skulls of this quality and completeness number less than a dozen in museum collections, making this skull a rare and important paleontological discovery. Estimated to achieve $15/20million, it will be offered without reserve in a single lot, live sale in New York on 9 December, where it is poised to become one of the most valuable fossils ever sold at auction.
