Mark Rothko Masterfully Defies His Medium with Luminous Color

29 June 2020 | New York

Executed in 1969, Green, Blue, Green was painted at the twilight of Mark Rothko’s career. The outstanding artwork visualizes Rothko’s experimentation with media, as in the 1960s, Rothko was advised by his doctor to limit his usage of heavy canvas. Instead, the artist turned to paper mounted on linen, and worked to achieve the same luminous color effect on a more challenging medium. Part of the Collection of Harry W. & Mary Margaret Anderson, Green, Blue, Green will be offered as a highlight of Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening Auction. (29 June | New York).
