Head of Impressionist and Modern Art & Co-Head of Marquee Sales Julian Dawes breaks down Joan Miró’s post-war painting, Femme, Étoiles (1945). Inspired from both the end of World War II and Miró’s Constellation series, Femme, Étoiles represents this estrangement of war and freedom, defined by Miró’s use of light and heavy lines to portray two opposing subjects that represent these contrary themes. Julian also talks about Miró’s Femmes Et Oiseau Devant Le Soleil (1945) which is painted in the same year but lends itself as an early motion towards abstract expressionism with ideas of the female form brilliantly expressed in this work.
