Highlights of the Contemporary Day Auction | Spotlight

London | 13 October 2023

Sotheby’s October Contemporary Day Auction brings together an exciting group of works by some of the most sought-after artists of the moment. In the spirit of Frieze week, this season’s sale combines an exceptional selection of contemporary works, by both British and international artists. In this Spotlight, the featured highlights come from Mamma Andersson, Georg Baselitz, Frank Bowling, and Elizabeth Peyton.

Mamma Andersson's Only the Nights are New takes inspiration from filmic imagery, theatre sets and period interiors and is imbued with an unpredictability and tension that is equally unsettling and compelling. With Vier Hände, Georg Baselitz employs a free and expressive use of colour to convey raw artistic emotion and define his iconic approach to painting. Belonging to Frank Bowling's Poured Painting series, Lenoraseas offers a cascade of kaleidoscopic colours that contrast and converge across the present monumental composition. Elizabeth Peyton's Balzac Still Life forms part of a series of still lifes suffused by the intimacies of reading, a portrait of Honoré de Balzac, a French novelist and founder of Realism within European literature.

The Contemporary Day Auction takes place at Sotheby's London on 13 October.
