A textile merchant with a trained eye. A design scholar shaped by Max Bill. For over five decades, Rolf and Margit Weinberg quietly built one of the most remarkable private collections of modern art in Europe. From Cézanne’s deeply psychological Portrait de Madame Cézanne to Moholy-Nagy’s Constructivist landmark Am 3—their collection is a masterclass in both discernment and daring, and proof of a lifetime devoted to scholarship and cultural stewardship.
Now, for the first time in decades, these masterworks are brought together in New York ahead of Sotheby’s Modern Evening Sale. As their works return to public view for the first time in decades, art historian and curator Dieter Schwarz—former Director of Kunstmuseum Winterthur and longtime friend of the Weinbergs—tells the story of the Weinbergs—one of deep connoisseurship, institutional generosity, and a lifelong dialogue with the very movements that shaped Modernism.
From Zurich to New York, the legacy of their taste continues to challenge and inspire.
Modern Perspectives: The Collection of Rolf & Margit Weinberg includes important paintings by Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, Wassily Kandinsky, Edvard Munch, László Moholy-Nagy, and Egon Schiele.
Rarely seen in public since the critically acclaimed exhibition, From El Greco to Mondrian toured major European museums between 1996–1997, these works will be exhibited in New York opening 2 May, before being offered in Sotheby’s Modern Evening Sale, presented in partnership with CELINE, on live 13 May at 7:00 PM EST.
