Toulouse-Lautrec was fascinated by the café concerts, circuses and dance halls of Paris at the turn of the last century. The subject of this painting, famed erotic dancer Cha-U-Kao, inspired the artist on more than one occasion, with another famous depiction now hanging in the Musée D’Orsay in Paris. 'La Clownesse Cha-U-Kao' will be offered as part of The Collection of A. Alfred Taubman: Masterworks auction on 4 November at Sotheby’s New York.
