This May, Sotheby’s will begin a multi-auction sale series of photographs that together comprise one of the most significant and comprehensive collections of 20th century and post-war photography ever assembled. Pier 24 Photography from the Pilara Family Foundation is an incomparable survey of photography, with a particular focus on American photographers, which charts the historical intersection of modern art and photography and reflects the dominance of the image in contemporary culture. In addition to the breadth of artists represented in the Collection, it is also distinguished by its unprecedented depth of now unobtainable masterworks from many of the most influential photographers of the 20th century: Richard Avedon, Robert Adams, Lee Friedlander, and Garry Winogrand, among others.
