Head of the Now Contemporary Sale Lucius Elliott discusses what it means to be a rival in the art world, and perhaps there is no better representation of the relationship between rivals than Francis Bacon's Portrait of Lucian Freud (1964). The present work by Bacon is a tribute to Freud, executed as a sign of respect towards the competing visionary.
