Deconstruction to Reconstruction | Titus Kaphar's 'Martyr'

8-15 October | London

Titus Kaphar’s ‘Martyr, 2008’ is one of his iconic shred paintings and is just one of the highlights of Sotheby’s upcoming Contemporary Art Day Sale (8 -15 October 2021).

In this latest Sotheby’s video, Contemporary Art specialist Antonia Gardner describes how Kaphar uses inspiration from Old Master Paintings and Christian iconography to create an image which he seemingly destroys but actually reconstructs to change its narrative. Discover how Kaphar follows in a long line of artists like Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Ai Weiwei and Banksy who also have used deconstruction as part of their work.
