A Thiebaud Cityscape Bends the Boundaries of Realism

New York | 12 May

From the Collection of Mrs. John L. Marion is Wayne Thiebaud’s City Downgrade, 2001, a beautiful example of the artist’s cityscapes. The work fantastically combines realism with spatial abstraction, resulting in a unique tribute to San Francisco, Thiebaud’s beloved home. While the artwork presents a recognizable snapshot of the city, the warped perspective and use of color lends the work a dream-like quality. Imbued with rich, colorful tones and sweeping forms, City Downgrade is an incredible example of Thiebaud’s abstract experimentation.
