On the night of 16 September 1787, after 4 months of heated deliberation, the delegates to Constitutional Convention had set in print the very first copies of The United States Constitution. Without this magnificent document, created by key historical figures including James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin, the United States as we know it simply wouldn’t exist. This is one of only eleven surviving copies and one of just two not in an institutional collection. This 18 November 2021, 234 years since the founding fathers engineered this rare document, Sotheby’s is honored to sell The U.S. Constitution from the collection of Dorothy Tapper Goldman. Following the Evening auction, an additional group of approximately 80 constitutional and related documents will be on offer in a dedicated, live auction this November 23rd in New York. The balance of the Goldman Collection will be offered in an online sale open from November 23 to December 2. All three sales will benefit the Dorothy Taper Goldman Foundation.
