  Only recently rediscovered, this portrait of the formidable Donna Olimpia Pamphilj was painted in Rome by perhaps the greatest portrait painter who ever lived at the same time as his most admired works; the portraits of Innocent X (Palazzo Dorin Pamphilj, Rome) and Juan de Pareja (Metropolitan Museum, New York).

  Peeter Baltens, Called Custodis, Landscape with Satan sowing Tares – an Episode from the Parable of the Weeds among the Wheat (Matthew 13:25).

  This exceptionally large panel is one of less than fifteen autograph surviving paintings by Peeter Baltens, and unquestionably the finest left in private hands, and is in remarkably good original condition for a work that is almost exactly 450 years old. Baltens was the almost exact contemporary of his townsman Pieter Bruegel the Elder, although he outlived him by some fifteen years.

  Sir Peter Paul Rubens, Head of Young Man Wearing Armour.
  Estimate £2,500,000–3,500,000.

  This is a vigorous head study that Rubens likely kept in his studio throughout his life for use in larger compositions. The head here was used in a large canvas now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna. Painted in the early 1610s it shows an artist in complete control of his medium, his brush, and his subject.

  This is one of the most famous images created by Liotard, a truly cosmopolitan artist who worked in most of the main cultural centres of Europe during his six decades as an artist. He excelled in exotic subjects such as this, which would have excited the senses of the 18th century viewer as a window into a different world.
