    Wings of Glory
    Adrian Landon

    Wings of Glory is a female winged horse named Nebula Rider. She weighs around 4000lbs, elevated 20' in the air, with wings reaching almost 35' high. Artist Adrian Landon, writes, "It was like building a space shuttle, with many people, builders, engineers and supporters all working together, and when it was ready, it shuttled everyone's imagination into the heavens, into the Nebulas of deep space. It captured people's inner child, as they would stare in absolute amazement and wonder with their mouths open wide, frozen."

    Stone 40
    Benjamin Langholz with engineering by Amihay Gonen

    Stone 40 is a site-specific work for 'Radical Horizons: The Art of Burning Man at Chatsworth’ by Benjamin Langholz with engineering by Amihay Gonen. The tenth artwork in the ‘Stone’ series, Stone 40 consists of four interlocking spiral pathways formed by 200kg stones each one increasing in height as they “float” off the ground leading visitors into the air and towards a moment of presence. Stone 40 is decidedly interactive and it is intended that visitors enjoy the artwork physically. Benjamin considers his artworks to be less what one sees, but instead what one feels during the experience

    Benjamin's collaborator, Amihay Gonen is an Israeli Berlin-based engineer who explores the possibilities of bridging the gap between classical engineering and interactive large-scale artworks. Amihay was a core member of Burning Man artworks Stone 27 (2019), Come-Million (2018), Renaixement (2016) as well enabling ten other Burning Man, and 4 Midburn projects.

    Murder Inc.

    Murder Inc. is a group of 100 crows (named, aptly, for a murder of crows) that were introduced as a roving guerrilla art project for Burning Man 2019. Drawn by artists from around the world and crafted by Charles Gadeken, they flew around the playa and landed at a new spot each day, circling and swarming and clustering around other beautiful art projects. Murder Inc. is a constant, ineluctable reminder of the inevitable and unrelenting power of nature.

  • Mermaid of Chatsworth
    Dana Albany (with Flash Hopkins, Kathy Richardson and Heather Henderson) and the Chatsworth community, children and volunteers.

    The Mermaid sculpture, created partially in the United States and then completed in Chatsworth, England with the help of local youth is an artistic endeavor that will serve as a constant reminder to help do something to protect our global waters and the land, far and wide, that we live on. The exquisite, mermaid sculpture will be made from 80% recycled materials (One person’s trash turns into another’s treasure).

    Her story emerges with a focus on saving the sea, rivers, lakes, and streams. She’s been driven from the depths of the ocean floor, her very make-up comprised out of recycled treasure chests of mixed metals, forgotten artifacts, re-used bottles of glass, broken china and so much more. She reclines elegantly on the green grass of Chatsworth, looking out at the lake before her. She knows that the very existence of all life is dependent on Water. She remains at the waters edge, landlocked herself, artistically, conveying a deeper message of a world at stake.

    The Flybrary

    The Flybrary is a 20-foot large steel head with book-like birds flying out of the top. The expression on the face is one of contemplation. The face itself is non-binary and is a mixture of all races, colors, and creeds. The birds represent our thoughts, the eyes thoughtfully looking up towards them.
    The interior space of The Flybrary can be opened to the public and has acted as a fantastical library within a head. It has a counter space, several catwalks, neural inspired chandeliers and reading nooks and bookshelves. It has its own curated library filled with books relating to free thought, new ideas, political theory, the environment, flight, classics, and esoteric books.
    Contemplation within a surreal setting and circumstance inspires new ways of seeing things, expanding one’s view from within to affect one’s view without.
    In a time where actions can be so limited by circumstances beyond our control, we must harvest our power within, our ability to think, learn and discover new ways of seeing that what surrounds us. We must know our history so we can invent better ways to be in the world.

    Wings Of Wind (W.O.W.)

    These wings were made at the request of Burning Man in conjunction with Chatsworth House. Based primarily upon another pair of wings Bryan Tedrick built in 2008 called “Spread Eagle” (which were shown in Black Rock City), these wings also include a circular frame at the center, proportional to human scale, and are able to rotate in the breeze. At 28’ wide, they are dramatic as they react to the slightest wind as if they are alive. There were no preliminary drawings for this piece. Tedrick worked the steel spontaneously, and “sketched” the primary structural arteries into being, being sure to roughly match both wings in order to maintain balance. Given these wings needed to be shipped via container, the allotted space for the wings was 7’ x 12’. Working within those parameters, the artist filled in the space trying to achieve a flowing, uplifting feel. In order to catch the wind, some solid areas were created using 20 gauge stainless steel-textured sheet, which added a feathery look as well. Fine tuning the balance meant adding weight to one side or the other; a plumb bob hung from the top dead center of the ring until it balanced directly over the bearing below.

    Tedrick performed all the labor himself in the two months available to complete the task. Total hours spent were 400. There is a light coating of Watco oil on the steel which can be reapplied as needed for a rich, wet, leathery look.

    At its core, Le Attrata is about the embodiment of what one is attracted to. Rather than being irrationally drawn to or disoriented by heat and light, these moths have embraced fire. They have become it, rather than allowing for it to consume them.

    The sculpture contains three turbine-driven blast furnaces that erupt into the moths, creating a unique and spectacular fire show. The sound and heat of the turbine driven moths is like no other, captivating and maybe a little terrifying. The moths perch atop three metal spires, the bases stretching across the ground to support richly finished douglas fir benches. Glowing chrysalis surround the sculpture, making an intriguing and welcoming space, even when the fires are out.

    A 1940 Lockheed Lodestar WW2 military jet; curved steel substructure, ¾” structural steel legs, and landing pads; hand blown glass flowers populated with mercury silvered plate glass, welded aluminum, LED lights and electronics.

    An instrument of destruction involuntarily crafted into an interactive flower inviting guest “pollinators” up its center and into the symbolic payload area to gather, interact, and observe. The harrowing journey of almost 50 vertical feet, is punctuated and softened by distorted reflections in polished aluminum, monumental glass flowers, and chords of light, pulsing, dimming and shifting continually.

    Mum
    Mr & Mrs Ferguson

    Mum is a mother grizzly bear and her cub. Mum is also what a participant could feel if they came onto a real mother and cub. Mum may be what the mother and cub feel as they look upon this stranger in their territory. Mum has been created exclusively for this exhibition at Chatsworth House. The mother’s pose is in spirit of the Antonio Canova Sleeping Lions in the Chatsworth Sculpture Gallery. Tucked into the mother bear’s side is her curious cub who may be less cautious than his mother. Mum is sculpted from polystyrene block and the fur for both the mother and cub is made up from over 55,000 US and Canadian pennies hand-laid into concrete skin.

    Co-creators on this project have been Susan ’Suki’ Kamman who helped place pennies in cement for several weeks. Tanner Reed is our blacksmith who pounded out the bear claws and noses and Ryan Fairweather of Campfire Glass Blowing of Calgary, Canada did the expressive eyes of the bears. The project was assembled at the studio of Mr and Mrs Ferguson in Hayward, California. The structural engineer for the project is Derrick Roorda. It was a three-month build.

  • 9 Ladies Stone Circle

    Relevé is a 25-30’ art installation inspired by the 9 Ladies Stone Circle, a Bronze Age archaeological site, located near Chatsworth House. As folklore has it, nine ladies were caught dancing at that location and were turned into stone for dancing on the Sabbath. Relevé is an art piece that not only pays homage to the 9 Ladies, but also celebrates the rebellious spirit of dance, music, and art. By challenging the folklore behind this archaeological site that was used to scare women and young girls from expressing themselves through dance, Relevé attempts to rewrite the story and release the women from their eternal punishment.

    Much like the ballet term used to instruct dancers to “rise up,” Relevé releases the 9 Ladies from their eternal stone prison into a dancing structure that defies gravity. Nine twisted structures, made of wood and intricately decorated with a rope and string-laced facade, dance around one another. Relevé is not only an art installation, but it is also a place that invites visitors to become involved in the art structure by creating their own string art designs on the facade and using the space for performances.

    The game of creating meaning. Thoughts on why we make bottle towers: what’s the value, what education may be gleaned, what information can we share with the youth and each other, through the process of wrestling 4, 11ft and 13ft glass and plastic bottle towers to life.

    Artist Shrine says: "Allowing something non-functional to birth itself, controlled chaos, and perhaps the most important idea, fun in the sun (or rain), I’m not sure if fun in the sun is part of these students' regular curriculum but it will be part of our curriculum, if there is any confusion as to why we’re manifesting plastic and glass bottle towers, refer back to “Fun In The Sun” or rain. Ultimately the most valuable skill gleaned from a process rooted in unknown discovery is intuition. Nurturing intuition is the heart of what I do and what I have to offer and in the spirit of celebrating intuitive development we will not be over-planning this project.

    Creating a space to celebrate the joy of the unknown, the joy of spontaneous creativity, embracing the absurd! Using all of our senses and our hands to take part in an absurdist experiment we refer to as Free Form Jazz Odyssey. Making a monument dedicated to making the not-precious precious."
