  • LES BOURGEOIS DE CALAIS
    The Monument des Bourgeois de Calais was commissioned in January 1885 and completed in 1895; it is composed of six figures, including Jean d'Aire, Pierre de Wissant, Jacques de Wissant, Andrieu d'Andres, Eustache de Saint-Pierre, Jean de Fiennes and measures 85 ½ in. (217 cm.) high. The mechanical reduction work took place in 1895 for Jean d'Aire and Pierre de Wissant, in 1899 for Jean de Fiennes, in 1900 for Andrieu d'Andres and in 1902-1903 for Eustache de Saint-Pierre. The reduction work was carried out for only 5 of the 6 figures in the monument, as Rodin did not want his group to be reproduced in reduction, and rather intended to explore the emotions and individual characters of each figure.
