With Alexandra Roy, Director, Head of Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern Art at Sotheby’s, Dr Thalia Kennedy, Global Creative Director, Turquoise Mountain and Abeer Seikaly, architect, artist and cultural producer

In collaboration with Turquoise Mountain and Abeer Seikaly, this conversation will reflect on the rich cultural legacy of Islamic textiles and artisanal crafts. Sotheby’s Alexandra Roy and Turquoise Mountain’s Creative Director, Dr Thalia Kennedy will discuss the stories and techniques woven into these traditions, from the delicacy of intricate weaves to the vibrancy of embroidered patterns. Abeer Seikaly will share a perspective on how these practices resonate in contemporary design, bridging heritage and the present.

Turquoise Mountain Workshop - Mother of Pearl

With Master Artisan Moataz Hammoush and Frankie Keyworth, Sotheby’s Islamic Specialist

Moataz Hammoush, a master artisan in mother of pearl inlay, learned the craft from his father in Syria before resettling in Amman, Jordan, due to the war. There, he and his partner Ossama established a workshop that now employs over 50 artisans, creating exquisite, handcrafted pieces exported worldwide. Their work has gained international recognition, including a collaboration with Jo Malone. His story is one of resilience and dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship.

Join Moataz for an inspiring hands-on workshop, where Sotheby’s Islamic Art Specialist, Frankie Keyworth, will provide historical insights into the significance of mother of pearl inlay throughout the Islamic world.

Turquoise Mountain Workshop - Wood Mosaic

With Master Artisan, Abdelrahman Shaaban Tabannaj (Abu Abdo) and Frankie Keyworth, Sotheby’s Islamic Specialist

Abu Abdo, a master artisan in wood mosaic, learned the craft as a child in Damascus under the guidance of a local master. After years of refining his skills in design, carving, and mosaic work, he moved to Amman in 2012, where he has built an incredible reputation across the trade for his intricate designs and dedication to continuous learning and improving his craft.

From his workshop, he creates exquisite jewellery boxes, wood mosaic tables, and other stunning pieces featured at the Turquoise Mountain store.

Join Abu Abdo for a hands-on workshop to experience this heritage craft, alongside Sotheby’s Islamic Art Specialist, Frankie Keyworth, who will provide the historical insights into its significance.
