Sotheby's Ireland

July 2021

A Spotlight On: Cologne

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, we will be featuring one of our offices across the world in each issue, and this time we turn our attention to Germany.

I am very pleased to let you know that Sotheby’s is set to launch auctions in Germany later this year, an exciting new development in our fifty-year history in the country. We will be hosting our sales from the Palais Oppenheim in Cologne, a city with a wonderfully rich history of artistic innovation, which we hope will become a focus for collectors not only from Germany, but from across Northern Europe.

Sotheby’s Germany will hold three inaugural sales this year, starting with Modern & Contemporary Art Online, 10th to 17th September 2021, with works priced from €3,000 to €300,000. Among the lots includes a work from the Collection of Sir Michael Smurfit:

Alexej von Jawlensky, Abend in Reichertshausen (Evening in Reichertshausen), 1904. Estimate: €130,000 - €180,000
Alexej von Jawlensky, Abend in Reichertshausen (Evening in Reichertshausen), 1904. Estimate: €130,000 - €180,000

Following this, a cross-category curated sale titled NOW Online will take place in November, with a focus on artists working across fine art, photography and design. A Luxury Online sale, dedicated to watches, jewels, handbags, sneakers and more, will also feature in the Cologne auction calendar.

Benefiting from the company’s existing worldwide reach, our new auction centre in Germany will form the heart of our endeavours in the region, combining local expertise with international excellence.
