Asia Week
London | October & November 2023
This November, Sotheby’s is privileged to present an extraordinary and diverse range of Asian Art collections.

Our dedicated Modern & Contemporary Japanese Art sale will be held from 24–31 October. Artists working and reinterpreting traditional art-forms include potters at the vanguard of contemporary Japanese ceramics, such as Tsujimura Shiro, Kuroda Taizo and Ogawa Machiko. Dyed textile works by Fukumoto Shihiko will be offered alongside painting and sculptural works of Sugai Kumi, Takamatsu Jiro, Hirako Yuichi and Honda Takeshi, as well as photography from Sugimoto Hiroshi.

Immediately following the sale is the Important Chinese Art auction, offering over 250 lots, including an impressive array of porcelains, early ceramics, cloisonne enamels, Buddhist sculptures and furniture from important private collections. Leading the sale are a magnificent and possibly unique gilt-bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara of the Dali Kingdom and a finely painted and very large blue and white ‘dragon’ charger of the Qianlong period. The sale also presents the collection of Dr Kenneth Lawley (1937–2023), a long time member of the Oriental Ceramic Society who amassed a wonderful collection of cloisonné enamels, Song ceramics, and other works of art since the 1960s.

Closing the week is the China / 5000 Years auction, comprising a diverse range of Chinese artworks, including jades, ceramics, and works of art. Spanning almost the length and breadth of the history of craftsmanship in China, this sale offers collectors a variety of works to suit a broader market.
