Finest & Rarest Wines Day 2

Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2004

Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2004 In 2020, on the 75th Anniversary of VE Day, this had a deliriously lovely nose of apple blossom, lemon zest and sheer breed. On the palate, the depth and dimension are impressive, with layer after layer of brioche, grapefruit and candied orange peel, all delivered with finesse of texture and stunning style. Perfectly poised and pure joy. Serena Sutcliffe, MW 2 bts (sc) Provenance Recently removed from a private temperature controlled cellar prior to inspection. Property of a lady. Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2000

Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2000 In 2017, what an impact, as befits the Great Man, but with all the elegance and élan of the 2000 vintage. The complexity on the palate steals up on you, with weight there, but incredibly disguised by beguiling, toasty flavour. A total treat. 施慧娜（葡萄酒大師M.W.） 6 bts (oc) Please note that for Wine and Spirits Lots, the Buyer’s Premium rate is 24% of the Hammer Price and the Overhead Premium rate is 1% of the Hammer Price. Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2002

Pol Roger, Cuvée Sir Winston Churchill 2002 This was the 14th release of Sir Winston and winemaker Dominique Petit's third vintage. In 2022, apples and biscuits on the nose - and on the palate! The depth, crispness and layering of this are stunning. Then comes the burst of almost tropical fruit - classicism meets exoticism, plus a snap of orange on the finish. A History of the English Speaking Peoples

Hand-written two-page letter by <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Sir+Winston+Churchill&amp;pfilters.dateRange=upcoming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Sir Winston Churchill</a>, discussing Ireland with his cousin, Ivor Guest.<ul><li>Sir Winston Churchill (British).</li><li>London: 1912.</li><li>Autograph letter signed ("Winston S. Churchill") to Ivor Guest (”My dear Ivor"), marked "Confidential."</li><li>Accompanying the letter is a copy of Jeremiah MacVeagh's Home Rule in a Nutshell: A Pocket Book for Speakers and Electors, ‘Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged’, London, The Daily Chronicle, 1912, original printed wrappers.</li></ul> An important autograph letter signed to his cousin, Ivor Guest, written at the height of the third home rule crisis, accompanied by a rare contemporary pamphlet containing Churchill's introduction to the home rule debate. 2 pages on a bifolium, Admiralty, 26 June 1912, offering candid political and personal advice during one of the defining constitutional crises of Edwardian Britain. Churchill cautions Guest against accepting employment in Australia or New Zealand ("*...you are not suited for it &amp; wd not enjoy it... Bombay wd be a different matter...*") before urging him instead to embrace an invitation from the Irish Nationalists: "...accept with alacrity the Nationalist invitation to go to Dublin... a most useful &amp; valuable idea... make the best speech you can there and make them feel you are their friend... am most anxious you shd make no mistakes...". The recipient, Ivor Churchill Guest, later 1st Viscount Wimborne (1873–1939), was Churchill's first cousin and a fellow Liberal politician. Having crossed the floor with Churchill from the Conservatives in 1904 over Free Trade, Guest had become one of Asquith's junior ministers. The present letter captures Churchill acting as both political strategist and trusted family adviser, encouraging Guest to strengthen relations with Irish Nationalists at a moment when the ‘Third Home Rule Bill’ dominated British politics. Only four months earlier Churchill had travelled to Belfast to advocate Home Rule, where violent Unionist opposition forced his meeting to be relocated under police protection. Written from the Admiralty, this letter provides an unusually direct insight into Churchill's private efforts to cultivate support for the Liberal Government's Irish policy. Accompanying the letter is a rare copy of Jeremiah MacVeagh's Home Rule in a Nutshell: A Pocket Book for Speakers and Electors, ‘Third Edition, Revised and Enlarged’, London, The Daily Chronicle, 1912, original printed wrappers. This is the first edition to contain Winston Churchill's substantial introductory essay, written while serving as First Lord of the Admiralty, and issued specifically to support the Liberal Government's Home Rule campaign. Intended as a practical handbook for politicians and campaigners, the pamphlet distils the constitutional arguments in favour of Irish self-government and represents one of Churchill's earliest separately published political contributions on Ireland. Surviving copies are scarce, particularly in original wrappers, and the work is regarded by Churchill collectors as the first appearance of his writing in this influential publication. Together, the letter and pamphlet form an exceptional historical pairing. The pamphlet sets out Churchill's public case for Home Rule, while the letter reveals his private attempts to influence events behind the scenes, encouraging a close political ally to travel to Dublin and win the confidence of Irish Nationalists. Few surviving Churchill manuscripts can be so closely linked to a contemporary printed work embodying the very policy under discussion. As such, the collection offers a rare opportunity to acquire both Churchill's public voice and his private counsel at one of the most consequential moments in the constitutional history of the United Kingdom.

It is still regarded as a defining work of twentieth-century history, reconstructing the action on the Western and Eastern Fronts, the wars at sea and in the air and the advent of tanks and U-boats. Churchill describes the Lusitania's sinking, the heroics of the Battle of Jutland, Verdun's 'soul-stirring frenzy', the bloodshed of Gallipoli, the Somme and Passchendaele, as well as the USA's entry into the conflict. It confirmed the author's reputation as a brilliant historian.
