From which is taken the much-admired piece of that name now performing with unbounded applause at the English Opera House in the Strand.</li><li>&nbsp;London: Printed and Sold by J. OCLC locates only 3 copies held by institutions. One in the U.S. and two in the UK. According to RBH &amp; ABPC, only one copy of this edition has ever appeared at auction.Within a year after The Vampire was published, the Vampyre Ruthven became hugely popular throughout Western Europe. By June of 1819, he was already onstage at the Theatre de la Porte-Saint-Martin (Paris) in a melodrama called Le Vampire, written by Charles Nodier. The title page has a 10-line quotation stating "Lord Byron's description of a vampire." This is an adaptation of the French play by Charles Nodier, The book is itself an adaptation of the extremely popular 1819 short story by Dr. Polidori, Lord Byron’s traveling doctor. It is said that the character of the protagonist vampire, Lord Ruthven, was based on the wild lifestyle of Lord Byron and the character from the original book was used in adaptations by a number of authors at the time. This English reworking for the stage was undertaken by James Robinson Planché (1796–1880), playwright and herald. At least four other stage adaptations of the book were written during 1820. Widely regarded as the exception to Planche’s earlier unexceptional writing, The Vampire, or, The Bride of the Isles, created a stir at the Lyceum (then called the English Opera House) in August 1820. The play was heralded for its use of the innovative "Vampire trap" which enabled the protagonist to emerge in a dream, and later disappear as the earth is destroyed.

This Evening, Monday, August 7th, 1820.&nbsp;</li><li>London, 1820.</li><li>Single sheet of paper with black-and-white print.</li></ul> According to the Huntington Library's Larpent collection, the play was licensed June 25, 1820.&nbsp;Though scheduled to be performed on the 7th&nbsp;it was delayed 2 days out of respect for the death, the previous day, of The Duchess of York and opened on Aug. 9. Opening night reviews were enthusiastic and "was honored with unusually long continued applause." An interesting link between The Vampire and Frankenstein is that Peter Thomas Cooke who played the title role in The Vampire at the Theatre Royale in 1820, was also the first actor to play the Frankenstein Monster in the London staging of Presumption. In fact, in 1826, a theatre-goer in London could take in a double bill and be treated to both monsters.

It comes from the collection of the prominent American journalist and avid and distinguished bibliophile Barton Currie. This attractive copy includes the wonderful engraved portrait of Johnson made by J. Heath after the famous painting by Joshua Reynolds and two other beautifully engraved plates – a facsimile of Johnson’s handwriting and a “Round Robin” with facsimiles of signatures. Boswell’s The Life of Samuel Johnson is considered by some as one of the greatest biographies ever written in the English language. Boswell’s personal acquaintance with Johnson began in 1763, and the author covered the entirety of Johnson’s life by means of additional research. The biography does indeed take many critical liberties with Johnson’s life, since Boswell makes some changes to Johnson’s quotations and even censors many comments. This is why some contemporary critics have stated that it cannot be considered a proper biography. However, the book is valued as both an important source of information on Johnson and his times, as well as an important work of English literature.
