Osborn's text considers primarily Altman's pre-revolutionary output in the context of contemporary Jewish art: 'The clever adaptation of essential features of folk art, understood in its formal aspect, and its skilful transformation into a new art not only makes Altman's graphic works interesting from the national point of view, but also establishes him as an artist of distinction in the general European context'.

He Who Does Not Work Does Not Eat: a Soviet porcelain propaganda plate, State Porcelain Factory, Petrograd, 1921 after a design by Mikhail Adamovich, circular with scalloped rim, the white cavetto painted with a portrait of Lenin after a sketch by Natan Altman, half an Imperial Eagle, a red star and ration cards, inscribed RSFSR in Cyrillic, the border with varicoloured slogan, marked on the underside with blue hammer, sickle and cog numbered 'V' and dated 1922, further numbered ‘243/31’ and signed ‘po ris. Adamovicha’, with green Imperial cypher for Nicholas II dated 1912 diameter 27cm, 10 3/5in.
