Ko-Kutani bowl late 17th century the circular bowl with gently curved sides and sharply flaring rim, the interior painted with a pair of large green quatrefoil leaves and a sprig of white vine on a yellow ground with scattered chrysanthemum designs, the sides of the exterior covered with cloud-like swirls on a light turquoise ground, the unpainted recessed base bears the fuku mark within double squares diameter 13 1/8 in. Illustrated: Mayuyama, Seventy Years, vol. 1 (Tokyo: Mayuyama & Co., Ltd., 1976), p. 448, no. 1362 The Kutani kilns are believed to have started production around 1650 in the village of Kutani in Kaga. Ko-Kutani ware (ko meaning "old") is traditionally known to be characterized by bold and lively designs outlined in black paint called gosu. The large shallow Ko-Kutani dish presented here is called Aode-Kutani or "Green Ko-Kutani," noted for its bright green, purple and yellow enamels, and ground patterns in floral or cloud motifs. Though the origin of the Ko-Kutani is still being debated among curators and scholars, it is widely accepted that the ware is one of the enameled porcelains fired in Arita. The Kutani kilns were first professionally excavated in 1970 which resulted in findings of celadon, white porcelain, blue and white porcelain, and blue-glazed wares. The fragments of pottery found in the waste heap confirmed that the kiln was only active in producing porcelain for a short time, therefore, indicating that the large volume of known Ko-Kutani works were unlikely to have originated from the Kutani kilns in Kaga. The absence of underglaze-blue decorated and thin-bodied, high-fire wares also supported the theory that the place of production was not at Kaga. It is more likely that the majority of enameled Ko-Kutani wares were actually manufactured in Arita, Hizen region in northern Kyushu, where traditionally known Ko-Kutani type shards were excavated. Thus, wares decorated in the enamels similar to those on the dish presented here are often designated as "Arita ware in the Kutani style." Regardless of the issue of a correct title, Ko-Kutani dishes are actively sought after for its bold and lavish design. The dish presented here is an excellent example of the rhythmical patterns created by the vines and leaves.

Ruri is the indigo-colored glaze produced by adding a little cobalt to feldspar. In the Yuan period (1279-1368), this glaze was already in use in Jingdezhen, China. In Japan, this glaze was employed in the early 17th century for Arita, Kutani and Himetani wares.
