His early work consisted of spray painting buildings and trains in downtown New York alongside his friend Al Diaz. The artist’s tag was the now infamous pseudonym SAMO. After quickly rising to fame in the early 1980s, Basquiat was befriended by many celebrities and artists, including Andy Warhol, with whom he made several collaborative works. At only 27, his troubles with fame and drug addiction led to his tragic death from a heroin overdose on August 12, 1988 in New York, NY. The Whitney Museum of American Art held the artist’s first retrospective from October 1992 to February 1993. In 2017, after having set Basquiat’s auction record the previous year with a $57.3 million purchase, the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa surpassed it, buying the artist’s Untitled (1982) at Sotheby's for $110.5 million. This set a new record for the highest price ever paid at auction for an American artist's work. Today, Basquiat's works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.

Keith Haring was an American artist and social activist known for his illustrative depictions of figures and symbols. His white chalk drawings could often be found on the blank poster marquees in New York’s public spaces and subways. “I don't think art is propaganda,” he once stated. “It should be something that liberates the soul, provokes the imagination and encourages people to go further. It celebrates humanity instead of manipulating it.” Born on May 4, 1958 in Reading, PA, he grew up in neighboring Kutztown, where he was inspired to draw from an early age by Walt Disney cartoons and his father who was an amateur cartoonist. After briefly studying commercial art in Pittsburgh, Haring came across a show of the works of Pierre Alechinksy and decided to pursue a career in fine art instead. He moved to New York in the late 1970s to attend the School of Visual Arts, and soon immersed himself in the city’s graffiti culture. By the mid-1980s, he had befriended fellow artists Andy Warhol, Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and collaborated with celebrities like the singer Grace Jones. Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in 1988, Haring’s prodigious career was brief, and he died of AIDS-related complications on February 16, 1990 at the age of 31. Before his death, Haring established the Keith Haring Foundation, a non-profit committed to raising awareness of the illness through art programing and community outreach. Throughout his career, Haring made his art widely available through the location of his murals, as well as through Pop Shop—Haring's own storefront which he used to sell his memorabilia. The artist’s mural Crack Is Wack (1986) can still be seen today on a retaining wall along FDR Drive in Manhattan. Haring’s works can be found in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

The art world was also much smaller at the time, so if you mailed out 200 invites, you were reaching a good core of the art world." (Rosen). Raymond Pettibon&nbsp;is a contemporary American artist known for his stylized ink drawings combining images and text. His inventive narratives blend historical content with consumer culture to yield incisive critiques of contemporary society. “I was making my work as transparent as possible, without equivocations, without calling attention to itself, without apology,” he explained. “There's a lot of conventions in the art world that are not to be transgressed, but my economy of means doesn't abide by those strictures.” Born Raymond Ginn on June 16, 1957 in Tucson, AZ, the artist is self-taught, but cites drawings by&nbsp;William Blake,&nbsp;Edward Hopper,&nbsp;Francisco Goya, and&nbsp;John Sloan&nbsp;as instructive to his practice. Deriving inspiration from comics, cartoons, and other pop culture iconography, Pettibon began designing album covers and ephemera for his brother’s band Black Flag in the mid-1970s. He went on to produce cover art for Sonic Youth, the Minutemen, and the Foo Fighters. In 2017, the artist was the subject of the major retrospective “Raymond Pettibon: A Pen of All Work,” held at the New Museum in New York, where he currently lives and works. Today, his works can be found in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Tate Gallery in London, among others.

Along with Liam Gillick, Tracey Emin, and Sarah Lucas, Hirst was part of the Young British Artists movement that rose to prominence in the early 1990s. “I have always been aware that you have to get people listening before you can change their minds,” he reflected. “Any artist's big fear is being ignored, so if you get debate, that's great.” Born on June 7, 1965 in Bristol, United Kingdom, Hirst was raised in Leeds. As a student at Goldsmiths College in London, his work caught the eye of the collector and gallerist Charles Saatchi, who became an early patron. Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991)—a large vitrine containing an Australian tiger shark suspended in formaldehyde—was financed by Saatchi and helped to launch the artist’s career. Hirst went on to win the coveted Turner Prize in 1995. In 2012, he showed what went on to be one of his most controversial work in decades, the installation In and Out of Love, which consisted of two white windowless rooms in which over 9,000 butterflies flitted around and died. In 2015 Hirst opened the Newport Street Gallery in London, which grew from his long-term ambition to share his art collection with the public. The artist lives and works in London, United Kingdom. Semaphore Gallery was a contemporary art gallery founded by Barry Blinderman and A. James Shapiro in 1980 in New York City, located at 462 West Broadway in SoHo. In 1984, Semaphore East was also established on the corner of 10th and Avenue B in the East Village, Manhattan. Semaphore East closed in 1986, and Semaphore Soho moved to 136 Greene Street, across from Leo Castelli. The gallery closed in the summer of 1987, when Blinderman accepted the position of Director at University Galleries of Illinois State University.Semaphore Gallery championed the work of key figures such as, Martin Wong, Duncan Hannah, Robert Colescott, Raymond Pettibon, Alexander Kosolapov, Futura 2000, Jane Dickson, Tseng Kwong Chi, among others. From a young age he enjoyed drawing, especially Disney characters &amp; cartoons. He initially set out to become a commercial artist but after a year at the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh, Haring dropped out, moved to New York City to enroll in the School of Visual Arts (SVA). Haring immediately felt connected to the thriving downtown arts scene happening and became friends with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Kenny Scharf. Inspired by the ideals of “art as life” and moving the art experience out of galleries and into the streets, Haring’s first major works were his subway drawings. Haring produced over one hundred of these public works between 1980 and 1985, integrating his now-iconic exuberant, cartoonish outlined figures into everyday public space in a way that directly engaged its viewers. Haring recalled that the most important aspects of these works was the immediate engagement people had with them, asking him “what does it mean?” and giving him feedback that he’d then incorporate into future drawings. These works quickly garnered the attention of tastemakers in New York and his first solo exhibition was held at Westbeth Painters Space in 1981 and a celebrated show debuted at the high-profile Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New York in 1982. Throughout the 1980s, Haring was committed to democratizing the art experience and along with paintings, he also created theater sets, billboards, murals, advertising campaigns and even a line of Swatch watches. In 1986 he opened the Pop Shop in SoHo - a highly influential contemporary crossover to art &amp; commerce that are now so dominant in the work &amp; practice of Yayoi Kusama, KAWS and Takashi Murakami. In addition to this ideology of accessibility, Haring was also very socially engaged and used his striking imagery to promote awareness of various political and social campaigns. His many notable public works included a mural on the western side of the Berlin Wall, the Crack is Wack mural in New York, and a mural for the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty in 1986. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and used his presence in the arts community to raise awareness of the crisis. In 1989, a year before his death, he established the Keith Haring Foundation, whose mission is to raise funds for AIDS organizations and children’s literacy and arts programs. Since his death in 1990, Haring has become one of the most widely-recognized and celebrated artists of the 20th century.

In 1969 Hans Mayer was the first to show Andy Warhol in Düsseldorf. The gallery later added exhibitions by further standout artists, Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Bill Beckley, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Tom Wesselmann, Keith Haring, &amp; Jean Michel Basquiat in the years to follow.

Basquiat Galerie Hans Mayer Exhibition Annoucement Card

A historic <a href="https://www.sothebys.com/en/search?query=Basquiat&amp;tab=objects&amp;sortBy=bsp_dotcom_prod_en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Basquiat</a> announcement card published on the occasion of the exhibition Jean-Michel Basquiat: Paintings, which occured April 8th through May 8th, 1982 at the Gagosian Gallery in Los Angeles.<ul><li>Los Angeles: Gagosian Gallery, 1982.</li><li>Off-set printed gallery announcement.&nbsp;</li><li>Post-marked on the reverse.</li><li>This work is presented unframed.</li></ul> Basquiat's first exhibition in Los Angeles at the Gagosian Gallery in 1982. He liked Los Angeles and was given a friendly reception by local collectors, prompting him to set up a studio in Venice Beach in 1983. His second L.A. show in 1984, and what would be his last exhibition on the West Coast, in 1986, were both at Gagosian Gallery as well.
