VINTAGE BEASTIE BOYS CONCERT POSTER FROM THE DEF JAM YEARS In 1978, Beastie Boys were formed out of members of the experimental hardcore punk band the Young Aborigines. Following the success of their single "Cooky Puss", the band began to incorporate rap into their sets, and hired DJ Rick Rubin for their live shows. Rubin would go on to form Def Jam Recordings with promoter and manager Russell Simmons, and approached the Beastie Boys about producing them for his new label. The band recorded Licensed to Ill in 1986, and it became the first rap album to reach number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

A RARE AND IMPORTANT POSTER CREATED FOR NYC'S LEGENDARY ROXY NIGHTCLUB BY GRAFFITI ARTIST KANO Kano is a graffiti artist active who began writing in the 1970s, and has been associated with the TC5, Stars Inc., CIA, and LOC crews. Kano designed only two posters for the Roxy, both of which are being offered in the present sale (see lot 21). The Roxy, one of New York's most legendary night clubs, expanded the DJ-ing careers of such Hip Hop pioneers as Grand Mixer D.ST, Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Jazzy Jay, DJ Red Alert, Afrika Izlam, Whiz Kid, Grand Wizard Theodore, and Charles Case. The Hip Hop nights, originally conceived and promoted by Kool Lady Blue, attracted a mix of South Bronx kids and Downtown punk and art scene types. The Rock Steady Crew, the Double Dutch Girls, Kurtis Blow, Run DMC, and The Beastie Boys performed there. The Roxy significantly influence the evolution of Hip Hop culture worldwide. Kano designed only two posters for the Roxy, the present lot, and lot 21. DJ ROSS ONE THE WALL OF BOOM Installation of 32 vintage boomboxes from the early 1980s-early 1990s, displayed together on a custom built shelf, and wired together to function as a singular sound system. THE WALL OF BOOM This imposing installation piece, created by DJ Ross One, consists of some of the rarest and most recognizable vintage boomboxes, including: -Two Clairtone Super Jumbos, the same model radio used by Radio Raheem to blast Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" in Spike Lee's classic Do The Right Thing, as he battles his neighbors for volume supremacy on the streets of Brooklyn. -Two very rare and highly coveted JVC M90s - Probably the most iconic, and possibly the loudest boombox of all time. The same model radio featured on LL COOL J's "Radio" album cover, Beastie Boys albums, and many others, and immortalized in LL COOL J's song "I Can't Live Without My Radio ("while my JVC vibrates the concrete...."). -DiscoLite - The same rare light-up boombox model made famous in Madonna's "Hung Up" video -Two Sharp GF-777s - Another iconic boombox model featured in many 80s NYC photos with 4 speakers lining the bottom. A self-proclaimed "rap nerd," Ross has been collecting hip-hop ephemera and memorabilia since he was 15. I dropped everything else I was doing and I followed them everywhere they went for three years.” Back in France in 1984, Sophie remained on the cutting edge. She worked on the first ever television show devoted to hip-hop. Called H.i.p.H.o.p and created by Sidney Duteil, a Frenchman of Guadeloupian heritage, it aired weekly on TFI, France’s most popular tv network. As the show’s artistic director, Sophie created its logo. And it was as a photographer, author and artistic advisor that Sophie worked alongside Sidney on “Hip Hop Story,” a very early French-language book devoted to the emerging culture, published by Hachette Jeunesse. Sophie moved to London in 1987, a member of the team that created MTV Europe. She went on to create, produce, and host Yo! - the first English-language Hip Hop tv show to be broadcast in Europe - a concept that MTV U.S. would take over a year later under the name Yo! Original paper handbills, ranging in size from 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 in. to 8 1/2 x 11 in., on pink, white, black, and blue paper, 5 being on thicker card stock. One with rectangular section clipped away at foot, one with some crinkling and small stains, some occasional light edge-wear. Hip Hop flyers such as these are some of the best primary sources for documenting the nascent Hip Hop movement. Packed with information, they record early fashion, the party scene, and give us the ability to trace the early evolution the careers of numerous DJs and artists; because they were only intended for short time use, very few have survived intact. One small gritty bar at 315 Bowery soon began to fill that void.Owner Hilly Kristal took over what had been a dive bar and then a biker hangout with the idea of featuring music very different from what the club was to become famous for – the full name of CBGB’s OMFUG was "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizers" – but by early 1974 he was booking live music from bands that had been playing the Mercer,  including Suicide and Wayne County. When Richard Lloyd and Tom Verlaine of Television spotted the club while on the bus to their Bowery rehearsal space, they approached Kristal claiming that they played a little of everything the club was titled for and somehow secured three Sunday gigs with the promise that their manager could pack the bar.Kristal liked the energy and crowd that the young bands attracted, and the accompanying bar receipts. The bands kept the door receipts, so the more they built their fan base and the more folks drank, the better it was for everyone involved.Second on the bill in the early Television gigs were the Stilletoes, a band featuring Chris Stein and Debbie Harry that soon transformed to Blondie and began their own headlining stint. Founding punks the Ramones soon followed and a scene was born.“I thought it was very crude music…. Very loud and abrasive. It was not what I liked in music. But what I liked where people were really into it. They were very sincere and really believed in themselves. They had a real desire to express themselves….” (Hilly Kristal, owner)It was a destination that one had to be rather determined to either perform in or really want to see the bands that did, as the neighborhood at the time was notorious and the club itself owed its cheap rent to being under a flophouse."The Bowery was, to repeat, a drab, ugly, and unsavory place. But it was good enough for rock and rollers. The people who frequented CBGB didn't seem to mind staggering drunks and stepping over a few bodies." (Hilly Kristal)The list of bands that played CBGB’s in the first wave of American punk and into the New Wave included Patti Smith, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, the Cramps, the Dead Boys, the Misfits, the Voidoids, the Runaways, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, and Agnostic Front. The first of the English punk acts to play the US played at Hilly’s bar, and even the Beastie Boys, in their earliest hardcore phase, debuted there.Few if any clubs are more intricately tied to as influential a musical scene as CBGB’s.
