[Ballets russes] ─ Léon Bakst ─ George Barbier Deux ouvrages illustrés sur les décors et les costumes des Ballets russes. Hommage aux Ballets russes et à leurs danseurs. BARBIER, George. Designs on the dances of Vaslav Nijinsky. Londres, Cyril W. Beaumont, 1913. Grand in-4 (335 x 280 mm). Broché, couverture illustrée en deux tons, texte imprimé en bleu. Chemise et étui modernes. Premier livre illustré par le décorateur et costumier Georges Barbier, consacré au danseur-étoile des Ballets russes. Édition originale anglaise. Achevée d'imprimer sur les presses de François Bernouard, à l'enseigne de La Belle Édition, le 10 juillet 1913. 12 compositions de Barbier, imprimées en couleurs, à pleine page, et 3 vignettes en noir. C’est à la demande de Cyril William Beaumont que Bernouard réalisa cette impression anglaise, parue simultanément en français. Musicologue, écrivain et éditeur britannique, Beaumont avait ouvert à Londres, en 1910, une librairie spécialisée dans la danse alors qu’il n’avait que vingt ans à peine et qu’il dirigea jusqu'en 1965. On lui doit de nombreux ouvrages sur la danse et son histoire. Tirage unique à 400 exemplaires sur vélin (n° 355). Magnifique album représentant Nijinsky dans quelques-uns de ses plus grands rôles comme Petrouchka, Le Spectre de la rose, Le Carnaval, Shéhérazade ou L’Après-midi d’un faune. [BAKST, Léon]. Demi-vélin à coins orné de larges filets dorés, dos lisse, pièce de titre, tête dorée (Reliure de l’éditeur). Édition originale. Portrait en frontispice (photogravure avec facsimilé de la signature de Bakst) et 77 planches contrecollées, dont 50 en couleurs et 5 dépliantes, présentant décors et costumes, à l’exception de la dernière (photographie du bosquet Paul Ier pour l’exposition d’art russe au Salon d’automne en 1906, décoré d’après un dessin de Bakst). Édition de grand luxe tirée à 80 exemplaires, sur beau papier teinté. Imprimée à Londres par De La More Press. Sans l’aquarelle originale annoncée à la justification, qui manque le plus souvent. "L’impression de richesse et de fatalité, de volupté et de terreur qui se dégage des conceptions que Léon Bakst a réalisées dans le costume et le décor de théâtre, est une des plus puissantes que nous ayons ressenties depuis longtemps" (A. Alexandre).

DIAGHILEV, SERGE LETTER SIGNED ("SERGE DIAGHILEV"), TO M. CHAUVET, ABOUT THE LAST PRODUCTIONS OF THE BALLETS RUSSES IN VICHY, AND STRAVINSKY'S BALLET PETRUSHKA, in French, enclosing the contract for the season at Vichy and asking that it be sent to M. Bonjean, explaining his ideas about the repertoire, promising to do his best to bring the ballets he requests, but explaining why Petrushka would not be suitable to be performed there, because of the large orchestra and the number of rehearsals that would be required ("...Quant à Petrouchka je pense qu'il sera très difficile de le monter à Vichy, car il demande un orchestre de 72 musiciens au minimum et un nombre considérable de répétitions d'orchestre et de scène--uniquement pour ce ballet..."), 2 pages, small 4to (c.17.5 x 13cms), the text by a secretary, printed stationery of the Grand Hotel, Paris, 15 February 1929 This letter dates from the final months of Diaghilev's life and relates to his last productions for the Ballets Russes, at the Casino de Vichy on 4 August 1929, including Falla's The Three-Cornered Hat and La boutique fantasque. Diaghilev died in Venice on 19 August. Although ill, he still took personal care of the Ballets Russes engagements. Stravinsky's ballet Petrushka, composed for the Ballets Russes in 1911, was one of Diaghilev's most enduring and demanding productions. DE BRUNOFF, [1922] 4to (333 x 255mm.), containing original programmes with colour and photographic illustrations, original green silk cloth, with sunken panel on upper cover containing a printed illustrated paper title by Goncharova, silk faded, joints torn A volume containing programmes and issues of Comoedia illustré dedicated to Ballets russes and Galas russes performances. The set designs and costumes were by Picasso, Sudeikhin, Goncharova, Derain, Gross, Gris, Larionov, Cocteau and, of course, Bakst. The programmes also contain photographs of the dancers in their elaborate costumes and form a colourful record of the productions.
