The people at Corti Brothers were far ahead of the whiskey curve, and they ordered 19-year-old bourbon at a time when well-aged American whiskey was practically non-existent – bottles like this one constitute the first known private-barrel bourbon selection. It was Darrell Corti, who ran the business at the time, who first convinced Van Winkle to use a cognac-style bottle. Van Winkle 18 Year Old Special Reserve Single Barrel "Binny's" 121.6 Proof 1985 (Signed Bottle) Single barrel selection for Binny's Beverage Depot, distilled on June 10th 1985, bottled in December 2003 by Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, Frankfort, Kentucky, hand-selected exclusively for Binny's Beverage Depot, front label very slightly wrinkled and lightly soiled, top of front label very slightly nicked, top left hand corner of label very slightly damaged This bottle has been signed by Julian Van Winkle III specially for The Great American Whiskey Collection Distilled at Stitzel-Weller in 1985, this iconic Van Winkle Special Reserve 18 Year Old Single Cask was hand-selected exclusively for Binny's, another of the great liquor stores in Chicago at the time (along with Sam's). What's especially rare is that the whiskey was bottled at full cask strength, which was very unusual even for Van Winkle, with the Binny's boasting the second highest proof for a Van Winkle bottle ever at a whopping 121.6 Proof. There were thought to have been less than 100 bottles yielded from the single barrel, and again, as with so many of these legendary Bourbon and Rye whiskies, the majority would have been consumed in the immediate years following release, leaving very few left in a handful of collections. Having first met them at a liquor store tasting, he agreed to sell them a single barrel which was originally due to be 10-12 years old. Because the bottling took so long, it ended up being a 15 Year Old whiskey, bottled at 107 Proof (the same as the regular 15 Year Old in squat bottle). Old Commonwealth Small Batch 10 Year Old 107 Proof NV Bottled by Commonwealth Distillery Co., Lawrenceburg KY, clear glass This special label created by Julian Van Winkle III in 1997 to revive the 'Old Commonwealth' brand, which had been originally trademarked in the mid 1970s and been used on a line of decanters in the late 1970s into the 1980s. Bottled at the Commonwealth Distillery (previously Old Hoffman) which Van Winkle had purchased in 1983, the same Cognac-style bottle that was being used for the Pappy Van Winkle's 20 Year Old Family Reserve was adopted, with the whisky said to be the same as that of standard 10 Year Old 107 Proof, albeit from a 'different spot in the warehouse'. Occasional bottles with special back labels were introduced (such as for Rebuen's Wines & Spirits in Texas).
