This book followed John Lennon and Yoko Ono's song, 'Power to the People', and brings together many of Lennon's public comments during his period of most overt political activism. The politically charged text takes the form of short quotations, including some which express his disillusion with the Beatles: "You have to be a bastard to make it, that's a fact, and the Beatles are the biggest bastards on earth." The book was never published, and copies of this proof are rare. It was probably pulled when Lennon realised that bringing together his fiery anti-Capitalist comments in a book would not ease his ongoing difficulty in getting the US authorities to grant him a Green Card.

Lincoln") as sixteenth President, directing the bearer of a manuscript petition from "Many Citizens of Loyalty" of Hickman, Kentucky, to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton 4 lines, [Washington], early December 1864, on the verso of the second leaf of a manuscript petition addressed "To the Honr. Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States," Hickman, Kentucky, 6 December 1864, 2 pages (232 x 178 mm) on a bifolium of blue-ruled machine-laid paper; stained at upper margin of first leaf, a few very short fold separations. In a citizens' petition carried to Lincoln by Parson N. N. Cowgill, border-state loyalists implore the president to establish a permanent military post at Hickman. Because of daily raids by rebel forces, which the Unionists had no power to repel, they ask the Lincoln "to instruct our commander Brig. Genl. Meredith," with whom they had already consulted, "to make a permanent military post at this place." The petition goes on to enthusiastically elaborate the benefits of such a plan: "We dont ask it for our own protection exclusively, but for the great benefit it will be to the Federal Army; we have a district of country comprising some 6 or 8 counties, (in area) about two hundred miles! it being varied in its products, offers every inducement to the Federal government to have it protected, and let all of its resources be brought forward to sustain our army, our worthy and truly Union friends. Parson N. N. Cowgill can give you a correct topography of our place and country. We would ask of you to extend our most appreciable Commander’s district to the Hatchie River as this point is the natural outlet for all the cotton and tobacco raised in that section of the country!" The petition concludes with the optimistic observation that Unionists "trust in Divine Providence [that] you may be awakened to our great necessity, and grant us the humble request we have made of you!" The citizens of Hickman were joined in their request by General Solomon Meredith, who had led the "Iron Brigade" at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and was at the time commander of the post at Paducah, Kentucky. On 9 December, Meredith added a lengthy note to the integral blank of the petition: "I am personally acquainted with Parson N. N. Cowgill and know him to be an honest, patriotic and loyal man. The petition of which he is the bearer asking that Hickman be made a permanent military post I would most earnestly recommend to be granted. The Government will be benefited equally with the citizens by adopting the course proposed, and the benefit both receive will be so much taken from the enemy who now occupy in little squads of guerrillas the whole country in that vicinity, and run off every thing of value to their army which they can lay hands on." Lincoln forwarded the petition to Edwin Stanton: "Submitted to the Sec. of War who is requested to see the bearer." Perhaps in response to Lincoln's endorsement, General Meredith added a postscript: "I strongly recomend that a military post may be established at Hickman Ky. by the Secy of War." While Hickman did not receive a permanent military post, in August Lincoln had declared martial law in this area of Kentucky, suspending the writ of habeas corpus to empower Union commanders such as Meredith to unilaterally arrest Confederate spies, sympathizers and bandits. This policy seems not to have kept the rebels in check, however. On 13 December 1864, H. C. Callett, M.D., wrote to the president from Paducah, reporting that the District of Western Kentucky was still under duress and asking that General Meredith remain in his position: "Since our delegate Parson N. N. Cowgill has left here, we find a change has taken place, in our district, that is producing very great dissatisfaction, and militateing very much against, the interest of our, national cause … I can say this to you, without fear of contradiction if you wish to keep down; this de[a]dly malicious feeling in West Ky and Tennessee; dont remove or make any chang[e] in our high and honorable friend Genl. oil on paper, laid down on panel This work is a painted copy after a drawing by Willem van Nieulandt (1584–1635), held at the Stiftung Weimarer Klassik und Kunstsammlungen, in Weimar (inv. no. KK 5259).1 Nieulandt is known to have engraved much of his own work and the fact this painting is in reverse of the drawing indicates that it was painted after a print. The composition grants us a fascinating insight into the inheritance of motifs between masters and pupils. Willem van Nieulandt, before he travelled to Rome in 1601, was a pupil of Jacob Savery (1565–1603) – another Flemish painter who moved to Amsterdam. Jacob taught both his younger brother, Roelant, who was later famously employed at the Court of Emperor Rudolf II in Prague, and his nephew Hans Savery the Younger (1589–1654). The bridge that appears in Nieulandt's drawing and the present work is first found in a drawing by Roelant Savery, albeit of a very different composition, today in the British Museum in London.2 It also recurs in a drawing dated 1617 by Hans Savery, in the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh, this time in a design almost identical to Nieulandt's drawing (and the present work).3 The recurrence of the bridge in these different compositions raises the distinct possibility that it may have existed in reality. Park, Mungo. highly important series of autograph letters signed, to his wife alice, with other family papers comprising: i) nineteen autograph letters signed by mungo park, nearly all to his wife Alice or Allison ("My beloved Wife"' "My Dearest Allie"' etc.) at Foulshiels, Selkirk, or Peebles, one to his father-in-law Thomas Anderson 58 pages, 4to, address panels, fragments of red wax seals, postal marks, London and elsewhere in Britain and Africa, 4 January 1801 to 19 November 1805, later pencil markings and deletions [by Park's 1815 editor], seal tears, considerable occasional wear, tear and dust-staining, some paper losses including bottom half of one page, seven of the signatures excised The first fourteen of these letters cover the four sparsely-documented years of 1801 to the beginning of 1805 when Park, already famous after the publication in 1799 of his account of his gruelling and hazardous 1795-97 expedition to the River Niger in West Africa, was largely kicking his heels waiting for the chance to undertake a second expedition up the Niger. He then had some temporary employment in a medical practice in Peebles, although, as the present letters show, he was often engaged in other business in London. Writing to his beloved wife Alice (nee Anderson), whom he had married on 2 August 1799, Park describes his journeying down from Scotland to London, family members and friends encountered (including an introduction to "[John] Home author of Douglas": "...he told me that if I could not find a situation to my mind he would procure me one of Best farms under his grace [the Duke of Buccleuch]..."), and other domestic news. He expresses delight on hearing her "sentiments about going abroad" to New South Wales, although he has not yet "accepted of any situation"' and speculates about the kind of life they may have there if he becomes surgeon to a regiment ("...I am constantly upon the look out, all day going from place to place and at night taking a lesson by the fire side..."), expresses dejection at the dashing of their hopes of this situation, discusses financial arrangements, and constantly expresses affection for her and their family, from whom, on 27 March 1801, he has been absent for three months ("...alas I have received nothing but one disappointment after another..."). In December 1803 he writes after another period of absence, still waiting for news of "the expedition" ("...I am to see Sir Joseph [Banks] tomorrow..."), and expressing how much he misses her and "all the children"' also declaring: "I can easily suppose that there will be for a time a want of surgeons about Peebles-it serves them right." ...Dearest of women cherish in your Mind the remembrance of one that loves you dearer than life, it will make my absence seem short, it will fix your affections on our Dear Children, and will add double Charms to that happy moment when by the blessing of god I again clasp you in my arms... As he waits for the promised expedition to materialise, he asks for Betty "to give the Sword & Pistol a rub as they will probably be called for soon"; announces on 9 January 1804 that "The expedition will sail on the 25th . of this month" unless deferred; consoles her repeatedly on her sorrow for his absence ("...I anticipate the distant day of my return when I shall again clasp my allie to my heart never again to part..."); gives her an outline of the expected expedition ("...I assure you my love that I have not the smallest doubt of accomplishing the whole in one year from the time we leave England...Government have no wish that I should run the smallest risk, the great object of the Expedition being to keep up a friendly intercourse with the Kings of the Country..."); refers to Lord Camden and others involved in the expedition, and the slow, drawn-out preparations for it (including buying rings and "five hundred Pounds worth of Beads"); mentions his probably seeing Mr [William] Pitt about it; expresses confidence in Sir Joseph Banks (who "thinks that nothing can be more important than the object of our Journey and I believe he has thought of nothing else ever since I told him"); sends her money to ensure her comfort for "one year"; and consoles her with the thought that on their return they will have made "something handsome in the money way and we will have gained a reputation that will ensure us Success in whatever line". He thanks her for the receipt of a lock of her hair ("...The hand of providence will surely bring us together when happier hours & Days will pass than any we have yet enjoyed..."); assures her "that nothing on Earth could induce me to proceed if I found it would be attended with Danger"("...the unhealthiness of the Climate is the only thing we have to fear..."); and, on 28 January 1805, announces that they are sailing "tomorrow morning"' promising that he will take every opportunity of writing to her. The next three letters, from 12 March to 29 May 1805, are written during the expedition, from on board ship off the Island of St Jago (giving an account of their sea-voyage through the Bay of Biscay), Kayee, River Gambia ("...We set off for the Interior Tomorrow Morning...every thing looks favourable at present...we have been Successful thus far, beyond my highest expectations..."), and Badoo near Tambacunda ("...I am happy to inform you that we are now half through our Journey without the smallest accident or unpleasant Circumstance...") ...The Natives instead of being frightened at us, look on us as their best friends and the Kings have not only granted us protection but sent people to go before us. The Soldiers are in the highest Spirits...I Expect to have an opportunity of writing you from Konkodoo or Bammakoo by some of the slave traders, but...you need not be Surprized if you should not hear from me for some months... ...we set forwards this evening for Tambacunda and in two days more we Reach Baniferile near the Falime Rivers. In the next letter, six months later, the tone changes drastically. Writing to his father-in-law, Thomas Anderson, on 16 November, Park breaks to him "the most sorrowful Tidings that ever reached your Ears"' giving a detailed account of the death of his son, Park's brother-in-law, Alexander Anderson ...He was affected with the fever, but very gently, on the 30th of June at the town of Kandy to the East of the black river...when we reached Dababoo, the frontier town of Bambara he was unable to manage his horse...in this Conveyance he was Carried 50 miles with great ease and Comfort...on our arrivale [sic] at Marrabas he walked from the Canoe to the town...but alas alas! on the night of Oct 24th he was affected with a bilious Diarrhoea...he considered the hour of his departure as at hand...In this manner Death gradually approached and on the morning of the 28th ...he gave a groan...and instantly expired... Three days later, on 19 November 1805, from Sansanding (docketed as received "at Mr Windhams office 4th October" [1806]), park writes his very last, moving letter, to his wife, breaking to her also news of the death of her brother My Beloved Wife It grieves me to the heart to write any thing that will bring a tear from your lovely Eyes or a Sigh from your Bosom...I pray that the almighty may give you Sufficient strength and support you under the most severe dispensation of his providence that has yet occurred to you in the course of your life...Your Brother Alexr my Dear friend is no more... He assures her, nevertheless, that he himself will return safely ...you may be led to Consider my situation as a great deal worse than it realy [sic] is. It is true my Dear friends Mr . anderson and G. Scott have both bid adiew to the things of this World and the greater part of the Soldiers have died on the march during the Rainy season...[but] there is no danger of sickness and I have still a sufficient force to protect me from any insult in Sailing down the river to the Sea...we Expect to be in England on the first of May...if this letter should reach you before my return you may be sure that I will make no delay...I do not expect to have another opportunity of writting [sic] till my return... this is mungo park's last surviving letter. It is not known for certain what happened to him and his already hugely depleted party, but from reports which circulated later in 1806 it seems that within weeks of this final letter Park had sailed up the Niger past Timbuctoo as far as Boussa where, for some reason, natives blocked their passage. In attempting to follow in the steps of his father and to find out more about what had happened to him twenty-two years earlier, Mungo Park's second son, Thomas, a midshipman on H.M.S. Sybella, met a comparable fate. After journeying 140 miles inland towards Boussa, he died of fever on 31 October 1827. vi) other family papers, comprising some thirteen letters on family and business matters written to Mungo Park's daughter, Elizabeth Meredith, by her brother Thomas Anderson and others (1846-54); two letters to Thomas Anderson by Mungo's brother Adam Park about Mr and Mrs Meredith's finances (1826); related letters to Anderson; and contemporary transcripts of three poems, one translated from "an extempore Arab Song" c.60 pages, chiefly 4to and 8vo, occasional light wear After his fellow Scotsman James Bruce (1730-94), Mungo Park (1771-1806) was the second great early British explorer of Africa. His memoir of his first arduous and heroic journey to the River Niger in 1795-97, Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa, is one of the classics of African travel literature. It is supplemented by the publication in 1815 of Park's Journal (conveyed to the Gambia with his other final communications by his guide Isaaco) on his equally heroic second journey to the Niger in 1805, from which Park never returned. the present major collection of personal and family papers of this legendary explorer is largely unpublished. Edited or abbreviated versions of his letters to his wife on 26 April, 29 May, and 19 November 1805 (the final moving letter before his death) have been published in later editions of his Travels (e.g. 1860 edition, pp.340-2, 344-5, 372-3), as also his letter to his father-in-law on 15 November 1805 (from another, incomplete copy dated 10 November, in the 1838 edition, p.88). Both these and the remaining, apparently unpublished, materials throw vivid light on Park's activities, his psychology, his affectionate relationship with his wife, and on the series of events which kept them painfully apart for so much of their relatively brief married life, as well as on other aspects of the preparation and undertaking of his last tragic expedition. this is a unique, illuminating and highly evocative biographical source.

The U.S. Instantaneous Photographic Co. firm produced several versions of the present album, with varying numbers of prints, for display in hotel lobbies on complicated custom-made cast iron display stands. The present album contains more images than usually found, and is numbered "No. 9" on the front pastedown. The album is relatively rare, with only 8 extant examples located by OCLC, and only three other examples in the auction records for the last 40 years.

Luce (1806 - 1879), captain of the SS Arctic, sister ship of the SS Baltic (Capt. Comstock), SS Adriatic, SS Pacific and SS Atlantic of the Edward Knight Collins' (Collins Line) trans-Atlantic side-wheel steamships. Collins' Line was notable for their vessels' luxurious appointments and trans-Atlantic crossing speed records during the 1850s. This revolver was presented to Capt. Luce on July 12th, 1852, only a few months after winning the coveted Blue Riband for trans-Atlantic speed and one day after the SS Arctic returned to New York from Liverpool. Interestingly, July, 1852 was a significant month for the Collins Line as it had then been granted an increase in US Government subsidies for trans-Atlantic mail service. July of 1852 was also interesting regarding this revolver as it was only a year following the legal decision in favor of Samuel Colt against the Massachusetts Arms Co. The fate of the SS Arctic was however a tragic one. On September 27, 1854 the SS Arctic collided with the French vessel SS Vesta off the coast of Newfoundland, and quickly sank taking up to 400 lives. Capt Luce's son, and Edward Knight Collins' wife and two daughters were among those who perished. For Colt collectors, the Collins Line is notable as it was the choice of Samuel Colt who regularly sailed aboard the SS Baltic under the command of Captain James Jesse Comstock (recipient of two presentation Colt revolvers and guest at Colt's wedding in 1856). Hiram Young (died Dec. 9, 1871), the gentleman who embellished and presented this revolver, is listed on the SS Arctic ship's manifest of July 12th, 1852 as passenger No. 30  - H. Young, Merchant, United States. Hiram Young and Edward Leavitt were sued by Samuel Colt (U.S. Circuit Court, case 3,032, May, 1852 through Nov. 1852) The case was presided over by Judges Nelson and Betts. This highly important case followed the case of Samuel Colt vs. Massachusetts Arms Co., (case 3,030) U.S. Circuit Court, presided over by Judge Levi Woodbury in 1851. Contemporary accounts curiously list Hiram Young (New York Daily Times, May 8th and Nov, 10 of 1852; and also The Federal Cases ... , Book 6, pages 171 - 2, published 1894) as Hiram Terry (New York Times and other papers). There was a Hiram K. Terry in Massachusetts who was a goldsmith if indeed that Mr. Terry can be assumed to be the Hiram Terry mentioned in some newspaper accounts of the patent infringment trial. Yet, Hiram Young of New York was a silversmith (essentially the same trade), and that name is etched on this Springfield Arms Co. revolver. Hiram Young's business was located, in the early to mid-1850s, at 19 Maiden Lane, New York as Young, Stebbins & Co. and later at 20 and 24 John Street, New York City, silversmith, silver-plater (electro-plater) who won an American Institute Silver Medal, 1859 - 1860, and as a judge, in 1866, awarding gold medals to Ball, Black & Co. and Tiffany & Co. 19 Maiden Lane was subsequently the offices of Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. That area of Manhattan was well-known as a center of firearms, engraving, and printing trades in the 19th-century.

Daguerre, Louis Jacques Mandé Historique et description des procédés du daguerréotype et du diorama. Paris: Susse Frères, 1839 8vo (192 x 125 mm). Half-title, 6 lithographic plates, ads present at end; some foxing, minor flaws and restoration. Contemporary marbled paper-covered boards; extremities rubbed with some chipping to spine, upper joint weak but holding. Half morocco case, spine gilt-lettered. First edition, the rare first issue of Daguerre's History and Description of the Daguerreotype Process, representing the greatest advance in graphic arts since the invention of printing. “Nowadays photography is so completely taken for granted that it is difficult for us to realize how startling the idea seemed to Daguerre’s contemporaries that Nature could be made to produce a spontaneous picture unaided by an artist” (Gernsheim). Daguerre, a set designer and creator of the famous Diorama—a picture show based on lighting effects (see lot 1007)—had spent years working with Joseph-Nicéphore Niépce to develop a viable photographic process. It was only after as Niépce died in 1833, however, that Daguerre accidentally discovered a method to produce the first successful permanent photographic image. On 7 January 1839, Daguerre’s friend François Arago made a brief announcement of Daguerre’s process in the Chamber of Deputies. It was quickly determined that Daguerre and Niépce's heirs should be granted a pension for life and that the invention should fall into the public domain. Arago made a more detailed report to a joint session of the Chamber of Deputies and the Academy of Sciences on 19 August, and the first public demonstration occurred on 7 September. Early in September 1839, Daguerre’s Manual, as it is usually called, appeared. The work contains a discussion of the genesis of photography, a full illustrated account of Daguerre’s process, and related documents. The bibliography of this book is complex. The first edition was issued with four different imprints (Susse Frères, Giroux, Molteni, and Lerebours), and these editions were identical with the exception of the imprints and the varying advertising inserts. Dozens of editions quickly followed in French, English, German, Swedish, and Spanish before the year ended (please find further information regarding the bibliography below). It would be difficult to overstate the importance of the invention of Daguerre’s eponymous process of photography. Now regarded as one of the fathers of photography, his process was the first to be publicly available, and its possibilities were instantly fascinating, capturing the imagination of some of the greatest minds of the epoch (see lots 1011, 1023, 1027, 1033, 1040, and 1042). Charles Darwin, for example, was a great photography enthusiast. This is certainly evidenced through his Expression and Emotions in Man and Animal, in which he collaborated with Oscar Gustave Rejlander, and can also be seen through his many portraits (see lots 1032, 1015, 1018, 1030, and 1035). Indeed, Darwin’s first experience with the photographic process occurred in 1842, just three years after the announcement of Daguerre’s invention. The daguerreotype—depicting a young Darwin holding his son William—is remarkable in that it's the only daguerreotype Darwin is known to have had taken in his lifetime. It was also not intended for circulation, or scientific scrutiny. Instead, the image held pride of place on the Darwin family mantle. "Perhaps no other invention ever captured the imagination of the public to such a degree and conquered the world with such lightening rapidity as the daguerreotype" (Gernsheim). Bibliography: The Giroux edition has been long mistaken as the first. In the Bibliography of Daguerre’s Instruction Manuals, Beaumont Newhall assigned priority to the Giroux printing, of which only two institutional copies are known, stating “published on or about 20 August” (Gernsheim 198-205). This assertion appears to be based solely on the fact that Daguerre arranged for Giroux, who was a relative of Madame Daguerre, to market his apparatus and Manual on an advertisement that appeared on the back page of the Gazette de France of 20 August 1839. But the legal literature of a case involving an engraver and printer named Giraldon helps to clarify priority. Giraldon sued Giroux for illegally reprinting the Manual, and reveals that Daguerre had contracted with Giraldon to publish his work. As no copies are known with a Giraldon imprint, it is evident that he printed the manual for several merchants, “Messrs. Giroux, Susse, and Lerebours,” varying only the imprints and the inserted advertising material. Giroux testified in his deposition that “It was agreed with Mr. Giraldon that he would deliver to me the first 300 copies, bearing my imprint. This undertaking was not fulfilled, and I therefore was no long bound to Mr. Giraldon. I reprinted the brochure, which everyone had the right to do ...” [italics added]. Daguerre scholar Pierre Harmant notes: “If one is to believe the Bibliographie de la France, only Susse Frères should be considered the original publishers of the Manual. The Bibliographie was the house organ of the Librairie Française. Each week it appeared with a list of works published in France during the week before. On 14th September, it listed Daguerre’s Manual for the first time (No. 4456), and the publisher’s name given there is Susse Frères.” After surveying notices of daguerreotypy at the other opticians in September, Harmant observes that no buyers or journalists mention it in August and writes, “we may safely conclude that the Manual was not available during August.” On 8 September, Isidore Niépce, the son of Daguerre’s late partner, wrote to his mother that “Daguerre has just published a brochure” on the process. In the letter, Niépce noted that “some days ago” he had quarreled with Daguerre concerning his father’s role in the invention. Niépce wrote that he thought they had parted amicably but “now the brochure ... has just appeared. It gives me a proof of his knavery.” This 8 September letter additionally suggests that Newhall’s 20 August date for the Giroux issue is in error. More significantly, Daguerre himself confirms Niépce's comment that the brochure had “just appeared” by 8 September. Daguerre in fact testified in the Giraldon lawsuit: “On the day of my first meeting on the Quai d’Orsay [his first public demonstration of his process, September 7], I was astonished to see my brochure in everyone’s hands, while I myself did not have a copy. These copies bore the address of Mr. Susse, who was to have been supplied only after Mr. Alphonse Giroux” [italics added]. Given the family ties between Daguerre and Giroux, it is difficult to imagine that Giroux would have neglected to give the photographer a copy of the Manual had it been ready. As such, the present evidence clearly indicates that the Giroux Manuals were not immediately available, and further that the earliest copies issued in fact bore the Susse Frères imprint. A rare, large-paper copy signed by President Roosevelt on the day of his inauguration. Given that Roosevelt assumed the presidency following the assassination of William McKinley, there was no inaugural event for his first term; the inauguration at the beginning of his second term served as the occasion for this address. With great optimism, he discusses America’s advantages and responsibilities to the world: “My fellow-citizens, no people on earth have more cause to be thankful than ours, and this is said reverently, in no spirit of boastfulness in our own strength, but with gratitude to the Giver of Good who has blessed us with the conditions which have enabled us to achieve so large a measure of well-being and of happiness. To us as a people it has been granted to lay the foundations of our national life in a new continent. We are the heirs of the ages, and yet we have had to pay few of the penalties which in old countries are exacted by the dead hand of a bygone civilization. … Much has been given us, and much will rightfully be expected from us. We have duties to others and duties to ourselves; and we can shirk neither. We have become a great nation, forced by the fact of its greatness into relations with the other nations of the earth, and we must behave as beseems a people with such responsibilities. Toward all other nations, large and small, our attitude must be one of cordial and sincere friendship. We must show not only in our words, but in our deeds, that we are earnestly desirous of securing their good will by acting toward them in a spirit of just and generous recognition of all their rights.” Though in addition to this statement of friendship and mutual beneficence, Roosevelt firmly declares the United States’ resoluteness and self-determination: “While ever careful to refrain from wrongdoing others, we must be no less insistent that we are not wronged ourselves. We wish peace, but we wish the peace of justice, the peace of righteousness. We wish it because we think it is right and not because we are afraid. No weak nation that acts manfully and justly should ever have cause to fear us, and no strong power should ever be able to single us out as a subject for insolent aggression.” Rare. We can trace no other copies of this volume offered at auction since 1921. The present copy was sold in 1997 by Walter R. Benjamin Autographs, who noted in a slip included here, “In cataloguing the large paper copy for the Roosevelt collection at Harvard, R.W.G. Vail described it as rare,” and further claimed the volume to be “Arguably one of the most extraordinary inaugural items ever on the market place.” Among the seven copies institutionally held, we can locate only one other signed by Roosevelt.
