Property from the Texana Collection of Howard Wilcox (Texas) — (Day, Freeman H. K.) Manuscript document signed by John D. Woalfin reporting the death of Day at the Alamo One page (180 x 180 mm), Gonzales, 28 May 1840, witnessed by Edmund Billinger, Chief Justice of Gonzales County, docketed on verso "Woalfin's affidavit"; lower margin ragged, old folds, slight separations at folds, lightly browned. "Day reached San Antonio and fell in the Alamo. …" An affidavit confirming the death Alamo defender Freeman H. K. Day: "John D. Woalfin on oath says that Freeman H.K. Day left Nacogdoches for San Antonio and never returned and that from report he believes and has good reason to believe that the said Day reached San Antonio and fell in the Alamo and he further says that the said Day was normally called by his companions Freeman." Day took part in the Siege of Béxar and later served in the Alamo garrison as a member of Capt. Robert White’s Infantry company, the Béxar Guards; he was killed in action during the battle of the Alamo, 6 March 1836. This document was likely written for Day's family. BATTLE OF THE ALAMO FRONT-PAGE "NEWS FROM TEXAS" DESCRIBING THE SIEGE AT THE ALAMO MISSION IN SAN ANTONIO IN THE WESTERN SUN AND GENERAL ADVERTISER, VOL. XXVII, NO. 12. VINCENNES, IOWA: ELIHU STOUT, SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 1836 4-page newspaper (20 5/8 x 13 1/4 in.; 522 x 338 mm) on a bifolium of wove paper, text in five columns; a bit wrinkled and foxed, disbound with some loss to blank margins at central fold. After a thirteen-day siege, Mexican troops led by Santa Anna and Martín Perfecto de Cos overran the Republic of Texas irregulars holding the Alamo Mission on 6 March 1836, leaving no survivors. More than a month later, with early reports of the battle just reach the Midwest, the Vincennes Western Sun provides a prematurely optimistic report, albeit one that even its editor admits, "is too good news to be true, but there is no doubt of a conflict having taken place between the Texian and Mexican forces at San Antonio. …" Most of the reports printed in the Western Sun originated from New Orleans: "From a passenger in the schooner W. A. Turner, from Matagorda, we learn that 75 Texians and 25 Mexicans, who had resorted to the Alamo or Fort at San Antonia, were attacked by a Mexican force of 4,000 men, with General Cos at their head, who raised the black fag of extermination and demanded a surrender. The demand was answered from the mouths of the cannon of the Texians, on which the Mexicans attempted to take the place by storm, but they were defeated with the loss of 500 men slain on the field, and the balance made a precipitate retreat in great disorder. This account was received at Matagorda by express from col. Travers [i.e., William Travis], who commanded the Texian force on this occasion. The express called for all the militia to rally to the field, and they were obeying the call."

I appreciate it for the work that I did and I know that there’s a lot of physicists who use my work. I don’t need anything else… I’ve already got the prize: the prize is the pleasure of finding the thing out…” (Sykes, No Ordinary Genius, p. 82). The Albert Einstein Award is an extremely prestigious award in the field of theoretical physics, considered by those in the field to be the equivalent to a Nobel Prize. While the Nobel is perhaps a more famous prize, the list of awardees for the Albert Einstein Award is far most exclusive; the Nobel prize in Physics has been awarded 114 times to 216 laureates, while the Albert Einstein Award has only ever been presented 13 times. The list of awardees is a who's-who of some of the greatest minds of the 20th century including Kurt Gödel and Julian Schwinger (1951), Edward Teller (1958), John Wheeler (1965), and Stephen Hawking (1978). The award was established by Lewis L. Strauss, one of the first five commissioners of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and the driving force behind the controversial Oppenheimer Security Hearings, which resulted in Oppenheimer’s security clearance being revoked. As a result, Strauss has often been looked upon as a bit of a villain, especially amongst those, like Richard Feynman, who worked with and admired Oppenheimer. As Gleick recounts in his excellent biography of Feynman, Genius, this was the first major award to be bestowed upon Feynman, and he was only the third recipient (The first award, given in 1951 was shared by the brilliant mathematician and logician Kurt Gödel, and Julian Schwinger, with whom Feynman in turn shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with Sin-Itiro Tomonaga). The award was publicly announced by Oppenheimer, who was at the time director of the Institute for Advanced Study, and under whom Feynman had worked at Los Alamos on the Manhattan Project. Feynman was apparently happy when he first learned he had been awarded the prize. He famously exclaimed “Hot dog!” when Strauss called to inform him, and wrote his mother about it, "'I thought you would be happy that I beat Schwinger out at last, but it turns out he got the thing 3 years ago. Of course, he only got 1/2 a medal, so I guess you'll be happy. You always compare me to Schwinger." (Gleick, pp 378-79) When Feynman realized that the Strauss who called to inform him was the same Strauss behind Oppenheimer’s demise, he became reluctant to accept the award. It was fellow physicist (and winner of the 1944 Nobel Prize in physics) Isidore Rabi, who convinced Feynman to accept, saying “You should never turn a man’s generosity as a sword against him.” (Gleick, p. 296) Feynman had felt a certain ambivalence against awards ever since he was a child, and this would continue throughout his life; he was famously annoyed at having won the Nobel, and had to be convinced by his wife Gwyneth to accept. After Lewis L. Strauss’ death in 1974, the officers of the Lewis & Rose Strauss Memorial Fund decided to stop offering the award. In 1977 however, the work of an English theoretical physicist came to the attention of the officers, and so Lewis H. Strauss wrote Feynman to seek his opinion on the matter: “…We have taken note of the work of Dr. Stephen Hawking of Cambridge University who appears to have made major theoretical strides in the areas where Einstein labored so long. Do you think that Hawking’s work is of sufficient importance to justify the Einstein award?... Is there anyone else whose name comes to your mind as more worthy?” Feynman sent his response a week later, agreeing that Hawking’s work was deserving of the Einstein Award, and Hawking become the award’s final recipient in 1978. Property from the Texana Collection of Howard Wilcox (Texas) — Caldwell, Matthew, Signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence Manuscript document signed twice ("Mathew Caldwell") certifying his electionas sheriff of Gonzales County One page (320 x 217 mm), Gonzales, Texas, 17 November 1838, countersigned by B. D. McClure, J. D. Clements, and Stephen Smith, file docket on verso; marginal chipping, dampstained. "Matthew Caldwell has been Elected Sheriff." A post-Revolution legal document: "Know all men by these Presents that we Matthew Caldwell … J D Clements, & Stephen Smith as Securities are held and firmly bound unto Sam Houston President of the Republic of Texas and his Successors in office, in the penal sum of five thousand dollars for the payment of which will and truly be made. … The condition of the obligation in Such that whereas the above bound, Matthew Caldwell has been Elected Sheriff of the County of Gonzales, aforesaid for the fractional time of the term which C Smith was Elected for, who is now Dec[eased]. Now of the said Matthew Caldwell, Shall will and truly perform all and Singular the duties as required by Laws of him as Sheriff … then this obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue given under our hands and seals." Below this certification, Caldwell has also signed an oath, swearing "that I will honestly truly and faithfully discharge discharge the duties of Sheriff for this County of Gonzales all and Singular that may be required of me, by Law, as Sheriff without favour or partiality to the best of my skill and ability so help me god." Matthew Caldwell, a frontier ranger, was the first to warn Texans of the Mexican advance after the fall of the Alamo. Partly printed document signed, 2 pages, Gonzales, Texas, 20 September 1834, marginal chips, browned. An indenture document — (Texas Treasury). Partly printed document signed by the Treasurer William B. Dewees and Comptroller Samuel B. Shaw, Austin, 23 April 1841; accomplished in manuscript, docketed on verso. "The last Naval Appropriation being inadequate to satisfy the claims of the Officers, Sailors and Marines of the Texian Navy, the holder of this Certificate, or his Assignee, will be entitled to [$25]. …" — (Texas Treasury). Partly printed document signed by the Treasurer William B. Dewees and Comptroller Samuel B. Shaw, Austin, 23 April 1841; accomplished in manuscript, docketed on verso. "The last Naval Appropriation being inadequate to satisfy the claims of the Officers, Sailors and Marines of the Texian Navy, the holder of this Certificate, or his Assignee, will be entitled to [$25]. … " — [Ben McCulloch.] Manuscript document signed by Captain John C. Hays and M. C. Hamilton, an oblong, Washington, D.C., 13 January 1845; irregular margins. Ben McCulloch received back pay: "I do hereby certify there is two months pay due to Ben McCulloch as Lieut of my Company from 28th Oct[ober] until 28th Dec[ember] 1845. …" Together four items. The signatories to, and subjects of, these documents include a number of celebrated Texas patriots. Jesse McCoy and Almeron Dickinson are both members of "the Immortal 32," a relief force of thirty-two Texian Militia from the Gonzales Ranging Company, which was the only unit to answer William Travis's open letter "To the People of Texas & All Americans in the World" and reinforce the Texians under siege at the Alamo. McCoy and Dickinson were killed in action, with all other Alamo defenders, although Dickinson's wife, Susanna, and their infant daughter, Angelina, did survive of the battle. Matthew Caldwell signed the Texas Declaration of Independence and, because of his recruitment ride ahead of the Battle of Gonzales, is known as the Paul Revere of the Texas Revolution. Benjamin McCulloch fought in the Texas Revolution and afterwards served as a Texas Ranger, a major-general in the Texas militia, a major in the United States Army during the Mexican–American War, and a brigadier-general in the Confederate States Army. John Coffee Hays was an officer in the Texas Rangers and the army of the Republic of Texas; he was later an early settler in Oakland, California. An excellent guide for the prospective immigrant from Britain, written by an incorporator of the Texas Trading, Mining and Emigrating Company, and probably intended as promotional material. Rare: Last sold in these rooms in 2004, the present copy is evidently one of only two to appear at auction since a Newberry Library duplicate was sold at Parke-Bernet, 5 May 1966. Fad was one of the original groups signed to Ruthless Records by Eazy-E. Managed by Jerry Heller, who also managed Eazy-E and N.W.A., the original line-up included Baby D, M.C. JB, Lady Anna, O.G. Rocker, and Crazy J. In 1987, J.J. Fad released the track "Anotha Ho", with "Supersonic" as the B-side to the album. All but Baby D and M.C. JB would leave the group and be replaced by Sassy C and DJ Train. The new line up went on to re-record "Supersonic" in 1988, re-releasing it as an A side, and the rest is history with the electro-charged single being an early West Coast track to explode nationally; the single certified gold by RIAA, was nominated for a Grammy in 1988 for best Rap Performance, and is one of the best known and loved Rap songs of all time. This gorgeous jacket, made the now-infamous Tony Alamo of Nashville, was given as a gift to Baby D by the group's manager, Jerry Heller. At the time, Tony Alamo jackets were all the rage, with stars like Michael Jackson, Brooke Shields, Mike Tyson, and Dolly Parton seen sporting them; as with many fashion trends, they are enjoying a major comeback, and modern Hip Hop stars such as A$AP Rocky and Nikki Minaj have been seen wearing the custom designs. [Crockett, Davy] — John Gadsby Chapman "Colonel Crockett." Circa 1950 Single sheet (679 x 559 mm). Hand-colored mezzotint, engraved by Charles Stuart, printed in the mid-20th century from the original 19th century copper plate, with wide margins, on hand-made paper. A striking and lovely image of a central figure in the mythology of the American West. Davy Crockett remains the archetype of the early American frontiersman. Though tied to the land that he helped to tame, Crockett was an active volunteer in the War of 1812, serving as a scout for General Jackson's army. Later, he became involved in politics and served in the Tennessee state legislature from 1822 to 1827. Crockett even held a seat in Congress from 1827 until 1835, when he joined the movement for Texan Independence. He met his death in 1836 during the heroic defense of the Alamo. John Gadsby Chapman had met Crockett in the early 1830s, and subsequently painted a portrait study of the frontiersman. Crockett's death defending the Alamo in 1836 immediately made him a national hero, and Chapman worked up a full-length portrait. This painting was acquired for the State of Texas and hung in the State Capitol, where it was later destroyed when a fire consumed the building. Another version was obtained from the artist; this picture now hangs in the Harry Ranson Research Center, University of Texas at Austin. The original 1839 version of this print is so rare as to be unobtainable, and is lacking from most major institutional collections.

If Jordan proved to be the most dominating player on the planet through his first career of nine All-Star Games and three straight NBA championships, the second career proved to be an even richer chapter. In 1995-1996, Jordan and the Bulls enjoyed one of the most remarkable years ever posted by any club and player. Jordan led the NBA with 30.4 points, winning a record eighth scoring championship, one more than Wilt.  The Bulls won a record 72 victories during the regular season and rolled easily through the playoffs with a 15-3 record. Chicago's combined record of 87-13 for the 1995-96 regular season and playoffs was the best in NBA history. Jordan captured the MVP awards for the regular season, All-Star Game and Finals, joining Willis Reed (1970) as the only two players to win all three honors in the same season. In this season, a more mature Jordan emerged. He was a far more effective and controlled jump-shooter and three-point scoring threat, but he could still turn on that burst of speed and drive (more like soar) to the basket when needed. Besides his league-leading 30.4 points per game, Jordan averaged 6.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.20 steals in 37.7 minutes per game, ranking third in the league in steals. This jersey was worn by Jordan in his tenth All-Star game, his first out of retirement, held at the Alamodome in San Antonio. He scored 20 points in 22 minutes and fed Shaquille O’Neal with several assists and won his second, and final All-Star MVP award in what was truly his most magical season. This jersey retains its Champion white tag with size 46 along with the Champion Exclusive tag made for the 1996 NBA All Star Weekend.  Interior tagging includes 3” extra body length flag tag.  Jordan has signed both the front and back of the jersey adding “Best Wishes” to the front signature.  The consignor obtained the jersey directly from Jordan. It was around 1941 that that Arline was diagnosed with terminal tuberculosis, and a year later, she and Feynman were married, and headed to New Mexico, he to work on the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, and her, to the sanatorium in Albuquerque. Feynman's interest in biology remained with with, and years later, in 1968 he gave a series of lectures on a variety of topics at the Hughes Aircraft Company. The lectures given from October 1969-May 1970 were on biology, organic chemistry, and microbiology, and it is very likely that Feynman consulted the present copy of Fruton's General Biochemistry when preparing these lectures.

One of, if not the finest copy we have ever seen on the market. “FIRST EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY SIGNED BY FEYNMAN FOR HIS “BELOVED SECRETARY” HELEN TUCK. This is presumably one of the twenty-five 'author's copies' reserved for Feynman by contract (Feynman Papers 27.01) and delivered to his office on or about 12 November 1984, ten weeks before publication (21 January 1985.) An excellent memoir of the "Rock Star" of physics, "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" was edited from taped conversations between Feynman and his close friend and drumming partner Ralph Leighton. Feynman was notorious for refusing to sign copies of his book, reportedly telling his editor "I'm not going to go on TV and I'm not going to sign any books!" - signed copies are thus rare, and were given mostly to his closest friends and family. "Surely You're Joking" was the only non-technical book by Richard Feynman published during his lifetime, and it was mainly responsible for his reputation at large.
