Dowling Bros 100 Proof 1916 Distilled in Spring 1916, bottled in Spring 1929, ullage: low shoulder This is fascinating piece of Prohibition-era history. The Dowling Brothers – Edward, John and Michael – operated a distillery in rural Mercer County, Kentucky, where this whiskey was distilled in 1916. After the onset of Prohibition, distilleries like Dowling Bros. were not only barred from making or selling whiskey, but were forced to ship their existing barrels to one of the few distilleries allowed to continue selling whiskey for medicinal purposes, in this case A.Ph. Stitzel in Louisville (which would become Stitzel-Weller after Prohibition ended). For bottle condition please refer to cataloguing notes above. 1 bt 75cl (nop) Black Maple Hill is among the most coveted American whiskeys, with a history that connects it with some of the biggest names in Kentucky distilling. Like several other extremely limited-release brands from the early 2000s, Black Maple Hill did not make its own whiskey, or even bottle it. Rather, its owner, a California-based company called CVI Brands, hired Julian Van Winkle III to find high-quality barrels of whiskey and bottle it for them. At the time, Van Winkle was working out of the disused Hoffman Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, where he bottled whiskey for his own brand, Old Rip Van Winkle, as well as for clients like CVI, all of which have long since achieved legend status among collectors. It is assumed that much of those early Black Maple Hill releases drew from Van Winkle’s barrels that he inherited from Stitzel-Weller, which his grandfather had helped found but which his father had been forced to sell. The rye whiskey he bottled for CVI, at 23 years old (LOTS #225-#227) came from a legendary batch made at the Bernheim distillery, the same whiskey that went into near-mythical bottlings like LeNell’s Red Hook Rye. Both the bourbon and the rye were released in minuscule amounts. Most of the releases were very old, some over twenty years old, and released in minuscule batches. By many accounts it was some of the best bourbon whiskey ever sold, ranking with early releases of Old Rip Van Winkle, Olde St. Nick and others legends. The relationship with Van Winkle lasted just a few years. With interest in bourbon picking up – and especially interest in his whiskeys – Van Winkle was running out of stock, and in 2002 he signed a deal with Sazerac to produce his Van Winkle line of whiskey at the company’s Buffalo Trace distillery. That deal required him to cancel his sourcing and bottling contracts, including with CVI Brands. The company pivoted quickly, signing a new deal with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, owned by the Kulsveen family and located at the old Willett Distillery. (It’s easy to tell the difference between Van Winkle and KBD bottlings: If the label says “Bottled in Lawrenceburg, KY,” it’s from Van Winkle; if it says “Bottled in Bardstown, KY,” it’s from Willett.) At the time, KBD/Willett did not yet have its own working distillery. W; what it did have, though, was a vast library of extraordinary barrels from distilleries across Kentucky, which the Kulsveens had bought for bargain-basement prices during the lowest points of the bourbon bust in the 1980s and 1990s. Reportedly, most of the whiskey that the Kulsveens bottled for Black Maple Hill came from Heaven Hill, but it is also possible that some of it came from the Barton Distillery and from Bernheim., in particular a series of rye releases, examples of which are included in this collection. The change in sourcing and bottling did not hurt Black Maple Hill – if anything, the association with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, at the time a quiet, some might say reclusive operation, only added to its cachet. So did its packaging: It came in a wine bottle with a simple, vaguely retro label, setting it apart from the rest of the market. And, of course, the whiskey itself was still amazing, even though the ages came down a bit under the new arrangement. Eventually the Kulsveens faced the same problem Van Winkle had. Demand for their own label, Willett Family Estate, was climbing, even as they made plans to open their own distillery. With access to older stocks dwindling, Black Maple Hill moved first to a no-age-statement label, then finally ceased altogether. It returned in 2014, this time in a new bottle shape and with whiskey made on contract at the Stein distillery in Oregon. While the name and the labels are the same, the whiskey inside is completely different, not even reminiscent of the brand’s glory days – if nothing else, they highlight just how magical those earlier bottles truly are. Michter's Single Barrel Bourbon 20 Year Old 114.2 proof NV

Michter's Single Barrel Bourbon 20 Year Old 114.2 proof NV 2016 release, barrel no. 1646, bottle no.14 of 212, bottle code: none, silver wax capsule thin crack halfway around 1 bt 75cl (nop) Starting in the mid-2000s, Michter’s was arguably the first American whiskey to join Old Rip Van Winkle as a truly world-class luxury brand. The Michter’s name originated in the decades after World War II, when a Pennsylvania businessman named Lou Forman named a distillery after his sons, Michael and Peter. But the Pennsylvania whiskey industry was in a steady and terminal decline, and the distillery shut its doors in 1990. Six years later, Joseph Magliocco, the president of New York-based Chatham Imports, acquired Michter’s abandoned trademark and moved its base of operations to Kentucky. There, he and his team began buying up barrels of well-aged whiskey from the state’s distilleries. To those distilleries, older, richer whiskey was too out of character to blend with younger spirits to create the cheaper brands they were used to selling. Magliocco had a different vision, one in which well-aged American whiskey could be sold alongside premium single-malt whiskey. He hired Julian Van Winkle III to bottle his bourbon and rye at his facility in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, and released them in 10-, 20-, and 25-year-old expressions. He bought whiskey from different distilleries, and through Van Winkle he reportedly acquired a sizeable number from the legendary Stitzel-Weller distillery, which went into some of the early bottlings of Michter’s. After Van Winkle moved his operation to Buffalo Trace, Michter’s, like several others of his clients, transferred bottling to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, aka Willett. Despite their being sourced from multiple distilleries, these whiskeys share a common set of characteristics, a Michter’s house style – big and chewy, full of tobacco and caramel, and despite their advanced age not at all oaked, unlike some other comparable whiskeys. According to multiple sources, several of the 10-year-old releases, including many of the bottles on in this auction (LOTS #483-#487), were in fact significantly older than that, some up to 16 and even 19 years old, but at the time Michter’s didn’t think that it would be worth the effort to change the labels. And while Michter’s does not share much information about its sources, reliable sources say that several of the legendary earlier 20 and 25 year olds (LOTS #477-#481), released up to the mid-2010s, came from barrels of Stitzel-Weller. Michter’s later distilled its whiskey through a contract with another distillery before finally opening its own distillery outside Louisville. It also continues to release the occasional batch of 20- and 25-year-old whiskey, all of it quite good, but nothing that compares to the exquisite beauty of those first early, now vanishingly rare releases. Michter’s is, again, one of the few whiskeys to stand alongside Van Winkle at the top of the luxury market, if not slightly above it – Van Winkle, after all, comes out every year, while Michter’s releases, especially at the 20- and 25-year-old mark, are rare and unpredictable. The project got as far as bottling 2 examples of each of the selected whiskeys, with prototype labels, but filled with the actual liquid to show the finished product as it would be sold. The whiskeys were tasted not just within UD, but also by respected industry critics at the time (see tasting notes by Dave Broom below from 1997). The 2 sets of liquid were split up and, ironically, one set was sent to the Stitzel-Weller distillery for safekeeping, while the other set remained at the company HQ in the UK for the European market (hence the 70cl bottle size). It is believed that the set at the SW distillery were destroyed in the distillery fire, making this set the only one that still remains in existence. This series of whiskeys, initially to be released in a limited run of 6,000 bottles per release, would have been a landmark in the history of premium American Whiskey. The project would have preceded the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection by a number of years, and seen the footprint of US Whiskeys in whisk(e)y collector circles change dramatically. These bottles represent not only ultra-rare liquid from now closed distilleries, but a crucial element of the story of rare American Whiskey's history that has until now gone untold. For bottle condition please refer to cataloguing notes above. 1 bt 75cl (nop) Black Maple Hill is among the most coveted American whiskeys, with a history that connects it with some of the biggest names in Kentucky distilling. Like several other extremely limited-release brands from the early 2000s, Black Maple Hill did not make its own whiskey, or even bottle it. Rather, its owner, a California-based company called CVI Brands, hired Julian Van Winkle III to find high-quality barrels of whiskey and bottle it for them. At the time, Van Winkle was working out of the disused Hoffman Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, where he bottled whiskey for his own brand, Old Rip Van Winkle, as well as for clients like CVI, all of which have long since achieved legend status among collectors. It is assumed that much of those early Black Maple Hill releases drew from Van Winkle’s barrels that he inherited from Stitzel-Weller, which his grandfather had helped found but which his father had been forced to sell. The rye whiskey he bottled for CVI, at 23 years old (LOTS #225-#227) came from a legendary batch made at the Bernheim distillery, the same whiskey that went into near-mythical bottlings like LeNell’s Red Hook Rye. Both the bourbon and the rye were released in minuscule amounts. Most of the releases were very old, some over twenty years old, and released in minuscule batches. By many accounts it was some of the best bourbon whiskey ever sold, ranking with early releases of Old Rip Van Winkle, Olde St. Nick and others legends. The relationship with Van Winkle lasted just a few years. With interest in bourbon picking up – and especially interest in his whiskeys – Van Winkle was running out of stock, and in 2002 he signed a deal with Sazerac to produce his Van Winkle line of whiskey at the company’s Buffalo Trace distillery. That deal required him to cancel his sourcing and bottling contracts, including with CVI Brands. The company pivoted quickly, signing a new deal with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, owned by the Kulsveen family and located at the old Willett Distillery. (It’s easy to tell the difference between Van Winkle and KBD bottlings: If the label says “Bottled in Lawrenceburg, KY,” it’s from Van Winkle; if it says “Bottled in Bardstown, KY,” it’s from Willett.) At the time, KBD/Willett did not yet have its own working distillery. W; what it did have, though, was a vast library of extraordinary barrels from distilleries across Kentucky, which the Kulsveens had bought for bargain-basement prices during the lowest points of the bourbon bust in the 1980s and 1990s. Reportedly, most of the whiskey that the Kulsveens bottled for Black Maple Hill came from Heaven Hill, but it is also possible that some of it came from the Barton Distillery and from Bernheim., in particular a series of rye releases, examples of which are included in this collection. The change in sourcing and bottling did not hurt Black Maple Hill – if anything, the association with Kentucky Bourbon Distillers, at the time a quiet, some might say reclusive operation, only added to its cachet. So did its packaging: It came in a wine bottle with a simple, vaguely retro label, setting it apart from the rest of the market. And, of course, the whiskey itself was still amazing, even though the ages came down a bit under the new arrangement. Eventually the Kulsveens faced the same problem Van Winkle had. Demand for their own label, Willett Family Estate, was climbing, even as they made plans to open their own distillery. With access to older stocks dwindling, Black Maple Hill moved first to a no-age-statement label, then finally ceased altogether. It returned in 2014, this time in a new bottle shape and with whiskey made on contract at the Stein distillery in Oregon. While the name and the labels are the same, the whiskey inside is completely different, not even reminiscent of the brand’s glory days – if nothing else, they highlight just how magical those earlier bottles truly are.
