The Collection of Jay I. Kislak: Sold to Benefit the Kislak Family Foundation (George Washington) — John White The First Century of Scandalous, Malignant Priests, Made and admitted into Benefices by the Prelates, in whole hands the Ordination of Ministers and government of the Church hath been. London: George Miller, 1643 4to (180 x 135 mm). Manuscript list of place names on initial blank, title-page, engraved headpieces, decorated initials; mild toning, numbers penciled in margins. In 18th-century blind-tooled calf, spine with morocco labels lettered in gilt, brown endpapers; front hinge cracked but holding, a little loss at head and tail, lightly rubbed at extremities, trimmed with occasional loss of catch words and signatures. First edition—of two of the same date. Comprising a register of one hundred ministers who, by order of the Puritan Parliament, were ejected from the clergy for their offences against the Church. The offences include adultery, drunkenness, refusing to administer the Sacrament, speaking against the Parliament, continuing to bow towards the East, infrequent preaching, failure to observe the Sabbath, practicing Catholicism, gambling, fornication, and more. The ninth entry chronicles the offences of Lawrence Washington, George Washington’s great-great grandfather. Reverend Washington, born in 1602 at Sulgrove Manor, Northamptonshire, elected a fellow of Brasnose College, Oxford in 1623. In 1632, he was appointed rector of Purleigh in Essex, which allowed him to marry Amphilis Twigden (as Oxford dons were forbidden to marry). In 1643, he was ejected from the clergy, on charges of drunkenness, as described here: “The Benefice of Lawrence Washington, Rector of Purleigh in the County of Essex, is sequestered, for that he is a common frequenter of Ale-houses, not only himself sitting daily tipling there, but also incouraging [sic] others in that beastly vice, and hath been oft drunke, and hath said, That the Parliament have more Papists, belonging to them in their Armies, then [sic] the King had about him or in his Army, and that the Parliaments [sic] Army did more hurt then [sic] the Cavaleers, and that they did none at all; And hath published them to be Traitours, that lend to or assist the Parliament.” Following his removal from Purleigh, he became rector of a far less well-to-do parish in Little Braxted, where he remained until his death in 1652. His son, John Washington (1633-1677), emigrated to Virginia in 1657, and married Anne Pope in 1658. Their first son, Lawrence (1659-1698), ultimately became a member of the House of Burgesses and was George Washington’s paternal grandfather. [France (Brittany): 3rd Quarter of the 15th Century] Vellum, i+191 leaves, ca. 100 x 65 mm, the ruled space ca. 50 x 35 mm, written with 13 lines per page in a fine bâtarde script, illuminated with 8 full-page miniatures within full floral borders, 5 historiated initials with three-sided borders, and numerous illuminated ornamental initials, some early marginalia; scattered soiling, marginal tear to f.67, miniature on f.104r a bit rubbed. Late 17th- or early 18th-century brown morocco, covers elaborately gilt tooled with red morocco labels; rubbed. In a custom clamshell box. Text Calendar, with numerous rare Breton saints, of whom six feasts are in red: Pol de Léon (Mar. 12 and Oct. 10), Hervé (June 17), Golvin (July 2), Yvo (Oct. 29), and Maudetus (Nov. 18); Hours of the Virgin (f.13r), with the Hours of the Cross, of the Spirit, and of St Catherine, intermixed; the Penitential Psalms (f.91r) and litany (f.105v); Office of the Dead (f.112v); Prayers including the ‘Obsecro te’ (f.151r); extracts from the Gospels (f.156r); suffrages (f.163r) to the Trinity, Sacrament, and saints, including to Pol de Léon (f.168r), Golvin, Hervé, Maudetus, Brangualadre, and various prayers including the Fifteen Joys of the Virgin (f.179v). Illumination The subjects of the miniatures and historiated initials are: Annunciation, Visitation (f.41v), Crucifixion (f.55r), Pentecost (f.56r), St Catherine (f.56v), Annunciation to the Shepherds, Adoration of the Magi, Presentation, Flight into Egypt, Coronation of the Virgin, King David in Prayer, Funeral Service, the Virgin. PROVENANCE: (1) Doubtless written for Hervé Koguelen (Hervé is a Breton name, and his family was perhaps from Le Coguen), whose name appears written by the main scribe on the last page: “Ces matines sont a herue koguelen’”. (2) Next owned by Paule Barber, with a similar inscription below Hervé’s. (3) The central ovals of the binding stamped “HV/ET” and “AP/P/RE” or “AP/RE/P”. (4) French 19th-century owner, with notes on the flyleaves signed with an NF monogram and date 1827. (5) Probably the manuscript sold in our London rooms, December 4, 1905, lot 237, with a catalogue clipping stuck to the back pastedown. Although the calendar includes a number of distinctively Parisian feasts, including the ‘Susceptio’ of the Crown of Thorns at the sainte-Chapelle (Aug. 11), all other evidence points to the book’s having been made for a Breton patron, presumably in the westernmost part of France, the diocese of St-Pol-de-Léon.

BIBLE IN ENGLISH. NEW TESTAMENT PRINTED IN GOLD 'The New Testament...according to The Present Authorized English Version. With commentary by Matthew Henry.' London: De La Rue, Cornish and Rock, ca. 1831 Large 4to (11 1/2 x 7 7/8 in.; 285 x 200mm). Enameled white paper, text printed throughout in gold; one or two stray spots to preliminary and final blanks, occasional and minor marginal spotting or fingersoiling, 4T with repaired closed marginal tears and some soiling. Publisher's full navy morocco, covers with wide greek-key blind tooled borders, enclosing gilt filigree borders, central panel with vignette of the Ascension in blind, spine with an altar and Sacrament before a church window, and the Agony in the Garden in blind, title and filigree motif in gilt, all edges gilt, turn-ins elaborately ruled and gilt, aqua watered silk doublures and endleaves; some rubbing to extremities, joints starting, silk faded. A remarkable rarity, with only three copies having previously been offer at auction The paper is enamelled after a process originally developed by Thomas De La Rue for use on superior grades of cards. It is likely that many of the other copies of the New Testament that were printed succumbed to their own weight (the present volume is approximately 12 pounds), and the enamellised paper stock, which, though innovative, rendered the pages prone to adhesion. Particularly in the damp atmosphere of churches and chapels, the text leaves would become irrevocably fused to one another. Thomas De La Rue was born in Guernsey in 1793, and moved to London by 1820 where he set up as a straw hat maker. Soon, however, he began embossing card in imitation of straw, silk, and other materials. He moved on to embossing leather, and the binding of the present volume represents the zenith of his technique. Around the time that De La Rue presented the gold-print New Testament to King William IV in 1831, he also received a Royal Warrant to produce playing cards. From playing cards De La Rue progressed to postage stamps, and ultimately to print money. To this day the De La Rue Company remains the world's leading manufacturer of bank notes and bonds, and it could be argued that the gold-printed New Testament is the company's foundation stone.
