R Webb, Class of 53, Yale [New Haven: 1853] Thick 8vo (258 x 175 mm) 123 engraved portraits (often from daguerrotypes) of Yale students and faculty, including one mounted salt print photograph, numerous engraved views of the campus, interleaved with autograph sentiments from the class of 1853; scattered foxing. Original pictorial extra gilt morocco with depiction of Yale gilt-stamped to upper and lower covers, edges gilt; covers detached, some rubbing, spot of loss under last raised band on the spine. An elaborate production. One of the earliest Yale Yearbooks. Prior to 1852 students would exchange daguerrotypes and use their own autograph albums. For the present yearbook, they were asked to provide engraved portraits (though one student used a salt print photo). Notables herein include Andrew D. White, co-founder and president of Cornell University, ambassador to Germany; George Shiras, Jr., Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court; Cornelius Hedges, lawyer, miner, explorer of the area known as Yellowstone National Park and Yung Wing. Wing was the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university. He returned to China, a dedicated reformer and supporter of the court of the Taiping rebels in Nanjing, brokering deals with Europe and the United States to build an arsenal comparable to those of the West. His later career included being a founder of the Chinese Educational Mission, sending over 100 students to New England for higher education. His views on political reform in China resulted eventually on a large bounty, the equivalent of over $1,000,000 today, and the fled to Hong Kong from Shanghai. He was able to return to Yale at the end of his life to see his sons graduate from his alma mater.

Elizabeth I--Privy Council Letter signed by six councillors, addressed to Lord Burghley as Lord Treasurer ordering the immediate payment of an additional £2000 to a group of merchants for victualling 4000 troops in Ireland for two months, signed by Sir Robert Cecil, George Lord Hunsdon, Sir William Knollys, Sir John Fortescue, Roger Lord North and Lord Buckhurst, with a subscription signed by Burghley ordering the payment to be made, 1 page, folio, integral address leaf, Greenwich, 29 June 1598 FUNDS FOR A NEW ENGLISH ARMY TO BE SENT TO IRELAND. 1598 saw a significant escalation of the war in Ireland as the rebel Earl of Tyrone laid siege to the English fort on the river Blackwater near Armagh. This letter provided funds for the supply of the 4000 troops who were being raised to relieve the garrison at Blackwater. On 14 August this army was attacked by Tyrone as it marched from Armagh to Blackwater under the command of Sir Henry Bagenal. The resulting battle of Yellow Ford was a complete victory for Tyrone: the English lost half their army, Blackwater was surrendered, the English retreated from Armagh, and other Irish lords came out in rebellion. This led to a heightening of the conflict, and at the end of the year the Queen's favourite, the Earl of Essex, was appointed as Lord Lieutenant with a much larger army.

Important Chinese Art

After the Pirates stormed their way to the pennant in 1909 with a record of 110 wins and 42 losses, they faced a World Series matchup with the Detroit Tigers. It was portrayed as a battle between the leagues two greatest stars; the Pirates beloved Wagner – the fan favorite, the best player in the National League who, at 35, would soon be nearing the end of the road – and the feisty Cobb – at 22 already a three-time American League batting Champion and one of the game’s most feared and disliked players. The press knew this meeting would result in a good story, even if it had to be fiction. The most widely told tale to come out of the 1909 World Series involved a confrontation at second base between Wagner and Cobb.  Cobb got on first and presumably yelled at Wagner, "Look out Krauthead, I’m comin’ down". Wagner, they said, told "Rebel" he'd be there, and according to which legend you prefer, applied a tag that either knocked Cobb out cold, loosened several of Cobb's teeth, or put three stitches in Cobb's lip. Cobb, along with play-by-play accounts of that Series, refuted the confrontation. As it turned out, no embellishment was necessary to make this one of the greatest Series in history.  Fred Clarke summed it up famously by stating, "Pennants are not won by managerial hot air or by newspapers. Championships are won on the grass." Throughout the classic seven-game affair, the Tigers managed to thwart the Pirates veteran starters, but they couldn't handle newcomer Babe Adams. Adams, the unexpected leader on the mound, won three games in the Series. The Pirates also jumped on the back of Honus Wagner, who simply sparkled in every facet of the game. After trading wins for six games, the Pirates ran away with game seven and their first World Championship. This is the 1909 World Championship medallion awarded to Pirates catcher George Gibson. For 11 years, Gibson was a full-time or platooned catcher for the Bucs. The burly Canadian set a Pittsburgh record with 1,113 games caught from 1905 through 1916. Throughout his years in Pittsburgh, first as a player, then as a manger, hired by owner Barney Dreyfus in 1920, he formed a deep and lasting friendship with Honus Wagner. Crafted in gold, the award features a large real diamond secured in the center of a baseball diamond shaped setting. A wreath decorates the perimeter, surrounding the words, “World’s Champions 1909”. The pin, which originates directly from the Gibson estate, is the era’s equivalent to a World Series ring. At some point, Gibson, or a close relative had the post removed from the back and mounted it on a larger (1 1/8”) scalloped edge gold medallion. Engraved on the reverse is “George Gibson, London Canada”. Accompanying the medallion is a Christmas postcard greeting written by Gibson to Honus Wagner in 1919, and a Canadian Western Union Telegraph featuring a large inscription from Wagner to Gibson reading. With best wishes to George from J. Honus Wagner Pirates, 1943” (10/10). The group is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the Gibson family. Additional LOAs from JSA and PSA/DNA.
