Raja Ravi Varma, 1848-1906 LOVE SONG Oil on canvas 21 by 11in. (53.3 by 27.9cm.) Provenance: Fritz Schleischer Family Collection Raja Ravi Varma's works represent the high point of the Indian adaptation of academic oil painting in Colonial India. His portrayal of the feminine figure pays tribute to India's classical literary and visual aesthetics. As Tapati Guha-Thakurta notes in her discussion on the subject, the 'representation of women must have posed a significant challenge in the artist's project of creating a new national art for modern India. The challenge lay in mediating images that were drawn both from life and from Western art and to make them viable as Indian mythic figures. The Western had to be transformed into the Indian, the sexual into the iconic.' In successfully combining the sensual with the modest, Ravi Varma's figures exemplify an ideal of womanly beauty.
