The manuscript source was a thirteenth-century compilation supplemented by readings from another manuscript, and this was considered a good critical edition of the text. The text was mainly prepared by Demetrios Doukas, with assistance from both Erasmus and Girolamo Aleandro. Erasmus subsequently translated the text into Latin for Badius Ascensius. Plutarch's essays were generally known about individually, such as On the education of children which had been translated into Latin early in the fifteenth century, until the publication of this monumental volume. Plutarch's essays and speeches on moral philosophy are less well known today than his Parallel Lives but they formed around half of his writings; they were of considerable influence on later writers such as Montaigne and Pope. The Aldine Press subsequently printed the Parallel Lives in 1519. Lyon: Antoine Gryphe, 1566 FIRST EDITION OF A NEW TRANSLATION OF PLUTARCH'S LIVES IN AN ATTRACTIVE ROMAN POLYCHROME BINDING FOR A MEMBER OF THE GIUSTINIANI FAMILY. This edition of the Lives was translated by Hermann Cruser (Crüser, Cruyser; 1510–1575), a doctor and jurist from Campen in the Netherlands, who had studied in Paris with Guillaume Budé, attended the court of François I as envoy of the Duke of Guelders (1536–1543), afterwards undertook diplomatic missions for Herzog Wilhelm von Jülich-Cleve-Berg, and was moved to translate Plutarch by the premature death of a daughter. This volume was likely bound for a member of the Genoese branch of the Giustiniani family, given that their arms are on both covers. The family had been the last Genoese rulers of the Aegean island of Chios, a family possession for two centuries until 1566. Among their ranks are a series of notable bishops, cardinals, historians and antiquarians. This book was later in the collection of Baron Horace de Landau (1824-1903), who at an early age entered the Paris house of the Rothschilds. He became their representative with the government of the newly created Kingdom of Italy in the 1860s. In 1872, he devoted himself to the formation of a great library and collection of works of art, purchasing a large villa on one of the hills outside Florence. He lived there for thirty years, expanding his collections by attending important sales across Europe and purchasing some great libraries en bloc. He bequeathed all his property to Madame Hugo Finaly, his niece, who made many valuable additions to the library. It was sold in these rooms following the death of her son, but this volume is not traced in the sale catalogues. Venice: Aldo Manuzio & Andrea Torresano, March 1509 First edition, heavy paper copy, of a foundation text of ancient scholarship and ethics, held in the highest esteem by generations of Western thinkers, Montaigne above all. Plutarch (ca. 46-120 AD) was the most acclaimed Greek intellectual of his age. Born into a wealthy Boeotian family, he served as priest of Apollo in Delphi. His parallel biographies of famous Greek and Roman personalities won him long-lasting fame. His short essays are gathered under the title of Moralia, and include major and minor philosophical questions (most famously, whether the hen or the egg came first), religious, political, and historical dissertations, as well as lighter interludes including the dialogue between Odysseus and one of the wretched men turned by Circe into pigs. The relatively late appearance into print of the Moralia was likely due to the difficulty of establishing a good Greek text. The edition, planned by Aldo since 1506, was eventually accomplished with the help of Erasmus, Girolamo Aleandro, and the Greek scholar and later printer Demetrios Ducas, who was in the end the primary editor. In his preface, Ducas admits that the 13th-century manuscript he had mainly relied on was so corrupt that he resolved to leave many passages as unintelligible as they originally stood. In the dedication to Jacopo Antiquario, Aldo recollects his short stay in Milan, while he is hailed as the "saviour of the Greek language" at the very beginning of Ducas’ Greek preface. The present copy has three of the six volumes: part one, volumes one and two, and part two, volume three. It is lacking part one, volume three, and part two, volumes one and two. An index volume is bound after volume two, part three. The colophon of the final volume also names Fédéric Morel as printer.

Towards the end of the sixteenth-century it became fashionable for Roman patricians to exchange books as mementos of their friendship. The giver’s name and arms customarily were placed on the lower cover, and those of the recipient on the upper cover. The earlier of such Roman “friendship bindings” are simply decorated: for instance, two with the Jacobilli family arms and initials G.I. on their lower covers, and Capranica arms and initials C.C. on upper covers (for one, see Gaius Sallustius Crispus, De L. Sergii Catilinae coniuratione, & Bello Iugurthino historiae [Venice: Giovanni Griffio, 1588]; Martin Breslauer, Inc., Catalogue 107, [1984], item 262). Later bindings are more explicit and more decorative, as, for example, two bound in the Soresini workshop having the Orlandini arms and name “Scipio Orlandi” lettered on lower covers, and Della Fonte arms and name “Ivliani Fontivs” on upper covers (for one, see Claudius Claudianus, Opera. Quorum catalogum, post eius vitam, pagina ab hac sexta, reperies [Lyon: Antoine Gryphe, 1589), Sotheby’s London, Catalogue of the … Library… of the late Michael Tomkinson, 3–7 July 1922, lot 1284); and six also bound in the Soresini workshop with the names and arms on covers of Torquato de Cupis and Giovanni Battista Crescenzi. On four of the latter, De Cupis’s name and the impaled De Cupis-Conti arms appear on the lower covers, and Crescenzi’s name and family arms on the upper covers. On the other two, these positions are reversed; one of these Cupis-Crescenzi bindings is in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana and will be offered in a future sale. Three “friendship bindings” of Domenico Massimo and Gaspare Ruggeri are known. The present binding was presumably a gift from Domenico to Gaspare, as Domenico’s arms are on the lower cover, and Gaspare’s on the upper cover. Another binding is similar; the third presumably was gift from Gaspare to Domenico, as Gaspare’s name and arms appear on the lower cover. Domenico Massimo was born in Rome in 1574, the eldest son of Alessandro Massimo (d. 1626) and Olimpia de Cupis. He held multiple offices in the municipal administration, and when Federico Colonna, Príncipe de Butera, was appointed viceroy of Valencia, Domenico accompanied him to Spain, and died in Madrid in 1640. Gaspare Ruggeri was born in Rome in 1572, the second of three sons of Pompeo Ruggeri (Ruggieri), Camerarius of the Compagnia del SS. Salvatore ad Sancta Sanctorum (1590), and Cangenua Miccinelli (d. 1596). He married Firmina Cansacchi, took on Capitoline offices, and embarked on a military career in the papal troops. After his father’s death, in 1591, Gaspare inherited a third-share in the magnificent Palazzo Ruggeri, “Il Palazzo del leone rampante”, designed by Giacomo della Porta (1588), and decorated (frescoes in 11 rooms) by Cherubino and Giovanni Alberti (1591–1592), with the stipulation that the palace was to be donated to the Compagnia del SS. Salvatore in the event no family members were left to inherit it. This became reality with the death of the childless Gaspare on 22 July 1657. Domenico Massimo-Gaspare Ruggeri Bindings I. Venice: Comin da Trino, 1567 The translation by Giovanni Tarcagnota (1508–1566) of Plutarch’s Moralia in a contemporary dos à dos binding. The practice of binding books back to back, sharing one board and having opposing spines, known in France as “reliures jumelle” and in Germany as “Zwillingsbände,” originated in Northern Europe in the 1540s; however, the earliest surviving examples are later: a binding executed in London by the binder of the MacDurnan Gospels, ca. 1567–1577, in the British Library (Henry Davis Gift 26; Foot, The Henry Davis Gift, volume 2 (London, 1983), no. 48); and one made in Germany, dated by the binder 1582, in the Morgan Library & Museum (51588; Needham, Twelve Centuries of Bookbinding, 400-1600 (New York, 1979) no. 91). This is the only known dos à dos binding made anywhere in Southern Europe. A few binders in the north and north-east of Germany were meanwhile developing a related structure, uniting four or six books in a backless binding. These whimsical “Mehrfacheinbände” and dos à dos bindings remained fashionable in England, Germany, and Denmark, until the mid-seventeenth century. When this binding was in the hands of Bernard Breslauer, it was described as “Neapolitan” and the heraldic insignia was identified as belonging to Don García Álvarez de Toledo y Osorio, 4th Marquess of Villafranca, Captain-General of the Mediterranean fleet, Spanish Viceroy of Sicily (1564–1566), who in 1569 received from King Philip II of Spain the titles Duke of Fernandina and Prince of Montalbán, and died at Naples in 1577. The bookbinder’s block displays the Álvarez de Toledo arms (Escudo de ocho puntos de azur equipolados a siete de plata) on a shield with eight flags (Banderas) won on the battlefield. The plumed and vizored helmet faces left, signifying a gentleman (Hidalgo). If these are indeed Don García’s arms, and the armorial block should be heraldically exact, then the binding must antedate his acquisition in 1569 of the Neapolitan dukedom of Fernandina. Breslauer supposed it might have been executed by an itinerant craftsman from Northern Europe, who brought with him to Italy knowledge of the dos à dos style. Breslauer observed that the vine border roll is also found a red goatskin binding covering a prayerbook printed at Rome in 1573, its covers decorated by unusual stamps of the Annunciation and the Magi derived from Northern European models.
