The recipient appears to be the publisher Freeman Lewis (1908-1976), a pioneer in mass-market paperbacks. Char, René Les Matinaux. Paris, N.r.F., Gallimard, 1950. Antonin Artaud et René Char. Avec un poème autographe. In-12 (185 x 110 mm). Demi-maroquin bleu foncé à bandes et papier décoré de filets dorés brisés, tête dorée, couverture et dos (P.L. Martin). Édition en partie originale, "Fêtes des arbres et du chasseur" avait été publié à part chez GLM en 1948, sans l’Abrégé. Un des 28 exemplaires sur vélin de Hollande Van Gelder (n° XII), second papier après 6 exemplaires sur Madagascar. Long poème autographe de René Char, titré "Antonin Artaud", signé et daté 12 mars 1948, à l'encre noire (un feuillet in-4 sur papier pelure, monté en tête) : "Je n'ai pas la voix pour faire ton éloge, Grand frère. Si je me penchais sur ton corps que la lumière va éparpiller, Ton rire me repousserait" (...). Ce poème du recueil présente une variante par rapport au texte imprimé (p. 67-68). "Le cœur, entre nous, durant ce qu'on appelle, "faute de connaissance", un bel orage" [...], devient "improprement" un bel orage". En juin 1945, une exposition avait été organisée par Char, Balthus, Gide, Picasso, Paulhan et d'autres, destinée à venir en aide à Artaud. Le 19 janvier 1948, René Char lui écrivait "Cher Antonin Artaud, J'ai pris, évitant les intermédiaires hilares, l'habitude de penser à vous dans l'inconnu et l'absence de propos ainsi se maintiennent intacts l'attachement que je voue à votre œuvre et l'affection que j'éprouve pour votre personne. Les circonstances m'ont appris "l'économie" des très rares volcans et aussi le pouvoir d'évaporation de tout ce qui a du prix, pour peu qu'on veuille l'appréhender. Je verrai, désormais, brisant le crâne des horloges, l'apocalypse de Van Gogh s'universaliser à travers vous. Votre charrue laboure ce monde perdu! soulève et remet à leur course passionnée les inextinguibles météores que les bourreaux de toujours tentent d'enfouir dans leur fumier. Merci, cher Antonin Artaud de vivre dans le feu de ces blés". Et, le 17 février 1948, Artaud lui fit cet envoi sur un exemplaire de Ci-git précédé de La Culture indienne : "au cher grand, violent et emporté, mais qui m'emporta, René Char". Antonin Artaud allait mourir, quinze jours plus tard, le 4 mars 1948 dans la maison de santé du docteur Delmas à Ivry-sur-Seine, où il était interné depuis deux ans.

Envoi autographe signé de René Char à Paul Éluard, sur le faux-titre à l'encre bleue : "À Paul Eluard Dans notre haute maison pulvérisée où deux fenêtres encore veillent pour les longues fraternités. René Char." 3 poèmes autographes signés enrichissent l'exemplaire, montés sur onglets à leur emplacement : - Biens égaux (2 pages, ratures et corrections) ; - Hymne à voix basse (1 page) ; - Marthe (1 page datée mai 1946). Le second poème est écrit au verso d'une feuille à en-tête des Forces Françaises Combattantes (état-major particulier du Général de Gaulle. Section Atterrissage Parachutage. France. R2. P.C. Avignon), unité où René Char servit comme capitaine en 1944-1945. Une photographie (entoilé, représentant un tableau de Goya) portant deux textes autographes, extraits du recueil : - "Ce qui vient au monde pour ne rien troubler ne mérite ni égards ni patience" ; - "une rose pour qu'il pleuve. Au terme d'innombrables années, c'est ton souhait – A la santé du serpent." C’est à l’initiative de René Char que Matisse entreprit la réalisation de la linogravure. Très conscient de la plus-value que cela apportait au recueil, Matisse précisa à l’éditeur Max-Pol Fouchet : "mon intention est de manifester à René Char plus qu’un simple hommage, et si le livre est accompagné d’une gravure originale, d’un tirage très limité, j’espère que René Char bénéficiera d’avantages réels". La profonde amitié entre Éluard et Char ne se démentit jamais, malgré leurs dissensions politiques et l'engagement communiste d'Éluard, que ce soit à travers leur collaboration littéraire au sein du groupe surréaliste, des voyages en commun, des séjours à l’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue ou leur engagement dans la Résistance. Char sera le témoin d'Éluard lors de son mariage avec Nusch. Dans une lettre de mars 1968, René Char adressait cette remarque à un journaliste de L’Humanité : "vous me faites dire à un moment que 'je dois tout à Paul Éluard', on ne doit jamais tout à un seul homme. Et mes dettes se divisent entre plusieurs. Ce qu’il faut rappeler, c’est qu’Éluard fut mon ami le plus cher". Provenance : Jean Hugues (20 mars 1998, n° 141). Référence : Cl. Elle reproduit le graphisme que Legrain avait composé pour la couverture de l'édition. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, July 1559 Eight volumes from the library of Louis de Sainte-Maure are known to survive. Three are recueils, containing altogether twenty-two separately published editions of Cicero’s orations, from the Parisian presses of Josse Bade, Michel de Vascosan, and Simon de Colines, printed 1532–1547; four are works of ancient or modern history, published at Lyon or Basel, printed 1556–1558. The present volume, published in 1559, the second edition of Jean de Maumont’s French translation of the collected works of the Christian apologist St. Justin Martyr, is the latest in the group. Louis de Sainte-Maure was the second son of Jean III de Sainte-Maure, comte de Nesle, and Anne d’Humières. In January 1545, in anticipation of his marriage to Renée de Rieux (1524–1567; after 1547, known as Guyonne, comtesse de Laval), François I granted him the title of marquis, which is lettered upon all eight bindings. Upon the death of in May 1547 of her uncle, Guy XVII, said to have been stabbed by Henri II during a quarrel, the Laval estate passed to the couple, and Louis de Sainte-Maure (now denominated Guy XVIII) is said to have transferred the rich Laval library to Nesle in Picardie (Maucourt de Bourjolly, Memoire chronologique sur la ville de Laval [Paris, 1888], II, pp. 3–4). Our binding was dated ca 1559 by Paul Culot, but it evidently was executed several years later. The “Prologue du Roy” is subscribed by Jean de Maumont at Paris, 10 June 1559, and the colophon dated July 1559. On 27 May 1559, Louis de Sainte-Maure stood together with Frédéric de Foix, Gaston de Foix, and Antoine du Prat in the palace of Westminster, and surrendered himself into custody, in accordance with the terms of the recently concluded treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis. The hostages were visited in London sometime during 1560 by Pierre Boaistuau; in 1562, all except Du Prat were released. The binding on the Du Choul (1556) may also date from the early or mid-1560s. Descriptions of it (we have seen no illustration) mention a “background of the whole cover decorated with a semis of gold dots” and a “back decorated with fillets, scrolls and dots to a similar design” with “gilt edges tooled ‘au pointillé.’” These same features are seen on the Brooker binding. The three recueils of Cicero and the Plinius were clearly bound some years previously, ca. 1550–1555, in the Parisian atelier designated the “Cupid’s Bow Binder.” The Giovio is also earlier, bound in Lyon ca. 1556–1558 by the “Medallions of Henri II Binder” (see lot 3). The Polybius (1558) has very recently come to our notice and no details of its binding are yet available. After the death of Renée, Louis de Sainte-Maure married Madeleine Olivier. Her remarriage after his own death (9 September 1572) was the occasion for producing an “Inventaire après décès” which might contain information about his library (see https://francearchives.gouv.fr/en/facomponent/fc2eef64d8551199f2d3fb6ccb5f3db3d92f8078). Apart from the supralibros, the earliest recognizable mark of ownership in our book is an eighteenth-century inscription on an endleaf, read as “De Joüy.” A bibliophile of this name, Antoine-Louis Rouillé, comte de Jouy (1689–1761), is known (Nouvel armorial du bibliophile, I, pp. 187–188; Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées françaises, 277); however, a different edition of this text was offered in his sale (Prevost, Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, 1558 [–1560] Sixteen Parisian armorial bindings displaying a stamp of a rampant lion within a cartouche of foliage are known. This insignia had been recorded in the Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées françaises (Paris, 1929) among “fers non identifiés” (Pl. 1860, 2–3). The arms were recognized as those of Bartolomeo Cenami by Pierre Berès, in 1963 (see list below, no. 14), and as belonging to the Cenami family by a Sotheby’s cataloguer, in 1977 (no. 6), but not until 1991, when Jean Balsamo published two bindings in Bulletin du Bibliophile (nos. 1, 16), did Bartolomeo Cenami emerge into the light as a bibliophile. The sixteen bindings cover books printed between 1558 and 1601, in French (6), Latin (5), Italian (3), and Spanish (2), printed at Rouen (4), Paris (3), Medina del Campo (2), Venice (2), and Augsburg, Basel, Leiden, Lyon, and Vicenza (one in each city). Seven bindings are in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana. Bartolomeo di Girolamo di Ridolfo Cenami (1556–1611) was the scion of a Lucchese merchant and banking family, who arrived in Paris about 1578, and quickly became a royal creditor to Henri III. He forged a similar relationship with Henri IV, as did two of his sons, Vincenzo (1581–January 1651) and Abbé Paolo (1587–October 1651), with Cardinal Mazarin. Bartolomeo kept a house in Paris in the rue du Grand-Chantier and a “Pavillon” at Charenton (Le clos Louvet), which was used occasionally by Henri IV for diplomacy and by the Dauphin Louis XIII for discreet meetings. Bartolomeo died in Paris and was interred in the church Saint-Julien-des-Enfants-Rouges. Another of Bartolomeo’s sons, Ferdinando Gerolamo, had remained in Lucca to look after the family’s interests, dwelling there in the Palazzo del Decanato di San Michele, and the Villa Cenami at Segromigno (bought by Bartolomeo in 1599). After his premature death, his brothers Vincenzo and Paolo resolved to bequeath all family properties at Lucca to his widow, Felice Saminiati. About half of the sixteen volumes contain the later inscription “Dello Studio di Casa Cenami,” in one instance with “Casa” overwriting “Ba…” (no. 3). Since four of the volumes also have ownership inscriptions of Lucchese collectors of the eighteenth century—Bernardino Baroni, historian of Lucca, author of a genealogical memoir of the Cenami family (no. 8); Francesco Maria Conti (nos. 10, 16); Giovanni Francesco Viligiardi (no. 13); and Niccolà di Sirignano, dated Lucca 1738 (no. 3)—it is likely that the library was dispersed in Lucca, not in Paris. The books perhaps were transferred by Bartolomeo himself, during the period when he was Lucchese ambassador to Florence (1594–1599), or posthumously, by his eldest son, Vincenzo, who returned permanently to Lucca about 1636. None of the sixteen books is listed in a post-mortem inventory of Paolo’s library taken in Paris, 31 October 1651. All of the Cenami bindings have a foliate center- and corner-pieces of a type associated with a Parisian binding atelier established by Nicolas Ève (d. ca 1582), royal binder to Henri III, and his son Clovis, royal binder to Henri IV. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, July 1559 Eight volumes from the library of Louis de Sainte-Maure are known to survive. Three are recueils, containing altogether twenty-two separately published editions of Cicero’s orations, from the Parisian presses of Josse Bade, Michel de Vascosan, and Simon de Colines, printed 1532–1547; four are works of ancient or modern history, published at Lyon or Basel, printed 1556–1558. The present volume, published in 1559, the second edition of Jean de Maumont’s French translation of the collected works of the Christian apologist St. Justin Martyr, is the latest in the group. Louis de Sainte-Maure was the second son of Jean III de Sainte-Maure, comte de Nesle, and Anne d’Humières. In January 1545, in anticipation of his marriage to Renée de Rieux (1524–1567; after 1547, known as Guyonne, comtesse de Laval), François I granted him the title of marquis, which is lettered upon all eight bindings. Upon the death of in May 1547 of her uncle, Guy XVII, said to have been stabbed by Henri II during a quarrel, the Laval estate passed to the couple, and Louis de Sainte-Maure (now denominated Guy XVIII) is said to have transferred the rich Laval library to Nesle in Picardie (Maucourt de Bourjolly, Memoire chronologique sur la ville de Laval [Paris, 1888], II, pp. 3–4). Our binding was dated ca 1559 by Paul Culot, but it evidently was executed several years later. The “Prologue du Roy” is subscribed by Jean de Maumont at Paris, 10 June 1559, and the colophon dated July 1559. On 27 May 1559, Louis de Sainte-Maure stood together with Frédéric de Foix, Gaston de Foix, and Antoine du Prat in the palace of Westminster, and surrendered himself into custody, in accordance with the terms of the recently concluded treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis. The hostages were visited in London sometime during 1560 by Pierre Boaistuau; in 1562, all except Du Prat were released. The binding on the Du Choul (1556) may also date from the early or mid-1560s. Descriptions of it (we have seen no illustration) mention a “background of the whole cover decorated with a semis of gold dots” and a “back decorated with fillets, scrolls and dots to a similar design” with “gilt edges tooled ‘au pointillé.’” These same features are seen on the Brooker binding. The three recueils of Cicero and the Plinius were clearly bound some years previously, ca. 1550–1555, in the Parisian atelier designated the “Cupid’s Bow Binder.” The Giovio is also earlier, bound in Lyon ca. 1556–1558 by the “Medallions of Henri II Binder”. The Polybius (1558) has very recently come to our notice and no details of its binding are yet available. After the death of Renée, Louis de Sainte-Maure married Madeleine Olivier. Her remarriage after his own death (9 September 1572) was the occasion for producing an “Inventaire après décès” which might contain information about his library (see https://francearchives.gouv.fr/en/facomponent/fc2eef64d8551199f2d3fb6ccb5f3db3d92f8078). Apart from the supralibros, the earliest recognizable mark of ownership in our book is an eighteenth-century inscription on an endleaf, read as “De Joüy.” A bibliophile of this name, Antoine-Louis Rouillé, comte de Jouy (1689–1761), is known (Nouvel armorial du bibliophile, I, pp. 187–188; Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées françaises, 277); however, a different edition of this text was offered in his sale (Prevost, Catalogue des livres de la bibliothèque de feu M. Paris: Michel de Vascosan, 1558 [–1560] Sixteen Parisian armorial bindings displaying a stamp of a rampant lion within a cartouche of foliage are known. This insignia had been recorded in the Manuel de l’amateur de reliures armoriées françaises (Paris, 1929) among “fers non identifiés” (Pl. 1860, 2–3). The arms were recognized as those of Bartolomeo Cenami by Pierre Berès, in 1963 (see list below, no. 14), and as belonging to the Cenami family by a Sotheby’s cataloguer, in 1977 (no. 6), but not until 1991, when Jean Balsamo published two bindings in Bulletin du Bibliophile (nos. 1, 16), did Bartolomeo Cenami emerge into the light as a bibliophile. The sixteen bindings cover books printed between 1558 and 1601, in French (6), Latin (5), Italian (3), and Spanish (2), printed at Rouen (4), Paris (3), Medina del Campo (2), Venice (2), and Augsburg, Basel, Leiden, Lyon, and Vicenza (one in each city). Seven bindings are in the Bibliotheca Brookeriana. Bartolomeo di Girolamo di Ridolfo Cenami (1556–1611) was the scion of a Lucchese merchant and banking family, who arrived in Paris about 1578, and quickly became a royal creditor to Henri III. He forged a similar relationship with Henri IV, as did two of his sons, Vincenzo (1581–January 1651) and Abbé Paolo (1587–October 1651), with Cardinal Mazarin. Bartolomeo kept a house in Paris in the rue du Grand-Chantier and a “Pavillon” at Charenton (Le clos Louvet), which was used occasionally by Henri IV for diplomacy and by the Dauphin Louis XIII for discreet meetings. Bartolomeo died in Paris and was interred in the church Saint-Julien-des-Enfants-Rouges. Another of Bartolomeo’s sons, Ferdinando Gerolamo, had remained in Lucca to look after the family’s interests, dwelling there in the Palazzo del Decanato di San Michele, and the Villa Cenami at Segromigno (bought by Bartolomeo in 1599). After his premature death, his brothers Vincenzo and Paolo resolved to bequeath all family properties at Lucca to his widow, Felice Saminiati. About half of the sixteen volumes contain the later inscription “Dello Studio di Casa Cenami,” in one instance with “Casa” overwriting “Ba…” (no. 3). Since four of the volumes also have ownership inscriptions of Lucchese collectors of the eighteenth century—Bernardino Baroni, historian of Lucca, author of a genealogical memoir of the Cenami family (no. 8); Francesco Maria Conti (nos. 10, 16); Giovanni Francesco Viligiardi (no. 13); and Niccolà di Sirignano, dated Lucca 1738 (no. 3)—it is likely that the library was dispersed in Lucca, not in Paris. The books perhaps were transferred by Bartolomeo himself, during the period when he was Lucchese ambassador to Florence (1594–1599), or posthumously, by his eldest son, Vincenzo, who returned permanently to Lucca about 1636. None of the sixteen books is listed in a post-mortem inventory of Paolo’s library taken in Paris, 31 October 1651. All of the Cenami bindings have a foliate center- and corner-pieces of a type associated with a Parisian binding atelier established by Nicolas Ève (d. ca 1582), royal binder to Henri III, and his son Clovis, royal binder to Henri IV. Thomson, John Illustrations of China and its People. A series of two hundred photographs, with letterpress descriptions of the places and people represented. London: Sampson Low, Marston Low, and Searle, 1874 4 volumes, folio (472 x 348 mm). Letterpress titles and descriptions to each volume, 222 photographs on 96 plates, produced by the Autotype Mechanical Printing Process of Spencer, Sawyer, Bird and Co., London, with guards; some intermittent pale spotting, mainly to prelims, one leaf in vol. II with upper corner irregularly trimmed by binder. Publisher’s maroon morocco-grain cloth, covers with large pictorial designs and lettered in gilt, beveled edges, edges gilt; skillful repairs to spines and corners, some uneven toning to vol. 1, upper outer corners lightly bumped. "My design in the accompanying work is to present a series of pictures of China and its people, such as shall convey an accurate impression of the country I traversed as well as the arts, usages, and manners which prevail in different provinces of the Empire. With this intention I made the camera the constant companion of my wanderings, and to it I am indebted for the faithful representation of the scenes I visited and the types of races I came into contact" (Introduction). First edition of volumes II-IV, second edition of volume I, of this important photographic record of China, made by the pioneering Scottish photographer John Thomson, one of the first photographers to travel to the Far East. Thomson documented the people, landscapes, art, and artifacts of the Chinese culture. He established a studio in the Commercial Bank building in Hong Kong in 1868, and spent the next four years traveling extensively into many regions, some remote and unpopulated. "His images display a genuine interest in Chinese customs and seem influenced by traditional Chinese painting, as exemplified by his treatment of the landscape in 'Wu-Shan Gorge, Szechuan' (pl. no. 138)" (Rosenblum 125). While earlier portrait photographs had made it to the West, Thomson's series offered the first actual views of street life. While some, like 'Itinerant Tradesman, Kiu Kiang Kiangsi' (pl. 192) may have been staged, "its sharpness and detail were meant to convince 19th-century viewers of the reality of a scene happened upon by accident" (ibid. 172). Ultimately, Rosenblum describes it as "perhaps the most completely realized result of a kind of curiosity about the way people live... the work attempted to make an arcane and exotic way of life understandable and acceptable to the British public by showing industrious and well-disposed natives interspersed with unusual architectural and natural monuments. In doing so, Thomson helped create a style and format for documentation that carried over to projects concerned with social inequities" (ibid. 346). Thomson traveled from the southern trading ports of Hong Kong and Guangzhou (Canton) to the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, to the Great Wall in the north, and deep into central China. From 1870 to 1871 he visited the province of Fujian, venturing up the Min River by boat with the American Protestant missionary Rev. Justus Doolittle, and then visited Amoy and Shantou. His travels were often perilous, and many of the people he visited had never seen a Westerner, nor a bulky wooden view camera, before. His subject matter ranged widely, from beggars on the street to Mandarins, Princes and government officials; from remote monasteries to Imperial Palaces. Nearly 700 of his photographs were acquired by the collector Henry Wellcome, and are now preserved in his venerable collection in London: glass-plate negatives coated with collodion. In the words of Françoise Heilbrun, Thomson possessed "an ethnographic and journalistic turn of mind, impeccable technique, original vision, and an admirable sense of composition" ("Around the World: Explorers, Travelers, and Tourists" 164). Emboîtage moderne, étiquette "Bibliophilia Bern". Rousseurs éparses et plusieurs feuillets uniformément brunis. Mouillure dans l’angle inférieur des cahiers a et d. Reliure un peu tachée, accident avec manque de vélin au plat supérieur. Argenture très légèrement passée et habilement restaurée. Manquent les lacets. Reliure macabre, attribuable à Clovis Ève, probablement réalisée en 1589, année où meurent successivement Catherine de Médicis (5 janvier) et Henri III (2 août). Protonotaire et secrétaire d’Henri II, Jean du Tillet († 1570), sieur de La Bussière, fut l'un des premiers historiens à aborder l'histoire de France d’après des documents d'archives. Cet ouvrage, posthume, fut publié par ses héritiers. "Thomas Mahieu, conseiller et secrétaire du roi, secrétaire personnel de Catherine de Médicis et précepteur des enfants de France, est l'une des figures les plus emblématiques des collectionneurs de livres richement reliés de la Renaissance après Jean Grolier, que l'on peut à ce titre considérer comme son père spirituel. Ce n'est toutefois qu'en 1926 que le lien a été fait entre lui et l'ex-libris ‘Tho. Maioli et amicorum‘, la forme ‘Maioli’ étant jusqu'à cette date interprétée comme un patronyme italien, et les reliures ainsi marquées considérées par suite comme italiennes. On recense aujourd'hui environ 120 ouvrages lui ayant appartenu, la très grande majorité d'entre eux richement reliés entre 1550 et 1565 environ, Mahieu ayant semble-t-il renoncé aux pièces de luxe après cette date. Aucun document ne permet à ce jour de fixer l'époque de la mort de Thomas Mahieu, au plus tôt vers 1588, d'après la date d'impression d'un ouvrage encore relié à son chiffre. Les livres lui ayant appartenu sont identifiables par la présence de ses ex-libris, monogramme, chiffre ou devise dorés sur ses reliures" (Fabienne Le Bars). Les livres provenant de cette prestigieuse bibliothèque étaient pour la plupart revêtus d’un décor "à la fanfare". Cette reliure en vélin, au monogramme simple (TDM), a permis de démontrer que Thomas Mahieu a collectionné au moins jusqu’en 1588. Avant sa découverte à Paris, vers 1987, le dernier livre connu acquis par le bibliophile, relié également en vélin à son chiffre, était l’ouvrage de Gaspar Peucer, Les Devins, ou Commentaire des principales sortes de devinations, publié à Anvers en 1584 (Hobson, French and Italian collectors and their bindings, illustrated from examples in the library of J. R. Abbey, Oxford, University Press, 1953, pl. 17). F.B. Adams commente ainsi notre reliure : "Recently an even later Maioli, in white vellum like the Peucer, and equally on a French text, was discovered in a Paris book shop. It extends Mahieu’s collecting activities to 1588 at least, and shows that he had not lost his taste for exceptional bindings. It is a ‘mourning’ or ‘penitential’ binding : the cover and flat spine are tooled in silver with a semis of tears, skulls, and cross-bones pierces with an arrow, and in the center of each cover is a fourth size of the simple monogram (n° IV). It can be attributed, like its predecessors, the Ève bindery. The text with it encases is Jean du Tillet Recueil des Guerres et Traitez d’entre les Roys de France et d’Angleterre […] There is a strong possibility that the binding dates from, the following year, when, early in January, Catherine de Medicis died and, in August, Henri III was assassinated. If Mahieu has reason to be grateful to the French royal family, hecould have chosen to commemorate them with this anti-British text in a mourning Binding" (F. B. Adams). Clovis Ève (vers 1565- 1634/1635), fils de Nicolas Ève, reprit l’atelier de son père, en 1584. Nommé relieur du roi, il exerça entre février 1583 et mai 1633 et travailla notamment pour Henri III, Henri IV et Louis XIII. Il fut à l’origine des reliures à emblèmes funèbres et exécuta, probablement à la demande d’Henri III, plusieurs reliures macabres pour les membres de la compagnie des Confrères de la Mort.

Le Roy visited Greece in 1754 and achieved publication in advance of the first volumes of Stuart and Revett's The Antiquities of Athens, which appeared in 1762. By his own admission, strict accuracy of illustration was not Le Roy's main aim, and he was particularly keen to include accounts of his travels in Greece in order to avoid any monotony in the textual descriptions of the plates, as well as to convey, very much in accord with contemporary French taste, the soul of the most beautiful of the ruined monuments. The set was given to a Parisian binder, who bound it uniformly in four volumes, in brown calf, tooled in gold to a geometrical design, with Wotton’s name and the “et amicorum” formula centered on each cover. It descended within his family, then collaterally, until 1919, when it was consigned for sale to Sotheby’s by the Earl of Carnarvon and dispersed in separate lots (two were bought by Quaritch, and two by Maggs). One volume has since entered the Houghton Library, Harvard University; two volumes have not been seen since the 1960s. Wotton’s taste for elaborate gold-tooled bindings and his adoption of the “et amicorum” formula have earned him the posthumous sobriquet “the English Grolier.” About 140 volumes from Wotton’s library are known. The fine bindings seem to have been acquired on four visits to Paris, in 1547, ca 1549, 1551, and ca. 1552. This set of Livius probably was purchased and bound on his first trip, when Wotton attended a binding atelier busy with commissions received from François I, Jean Grolier, Charles de Lorraine, and Cardinal Granvelle, among other noted bibliophiles. Here Wotton presumably was introduced to the tooled Grolieresque “et amicorum” ownership inscription and to Grolier’s preferences for plain gilt edges and no ties. Wotton may have ordered as many as thirty bindings from this anonymous shop, designated by Mirjam Foot “Wotton’s Binder A.” The shop closed about 1550. On his next trip to Paris Wotton visited another atelier and chose to decorate his bindings with armorial stamps. Wotton's presumed set The set is described by William Kemp as comprising six volumes, but by Baudrier (VIII, p.173) as five volumes, with Decadum XIIII Epitome designated “Decas quintus,” the Glareanus entered separately (pp. 163–164), and the Beatus Rhenanus and Gelenius, also entered separately (pp. 164–165).
